Raise to speak working poorly on watchOS 5

I'm having trouble getting the "raise to speak"- function to work anywhere close to reliably.

I'm using an Apple Watch Series 3 paired to an iPhone 7 on the latest software updates. I've tried speaking in various proximity to the watch after raising, and seeking louder. I can't get it to work in mor than 1/2 or maybe 2/3 of the time, despite being in a completely silent environment.

I've tried toggling the fiction on and off in the watch's settings and rebooting the watch.

Anyone have the same issue? Anyone know of a fix? And maybe most importantly: anyone not having this issue at all?

Found the answer to my problem in another thread ... the Siri function has been working fine, the list offered while informative and boiler plate didn't help ... it was the 'raise to speak' portion that was hit and miss ....

Apparently the watch face must be in a vertical orientation (think perpendicular to the floor) then the raise to speak function works every time. Rotate your wrist off the vertical plane ... and it doesn't pick up to invoke Siri for rain to speak.

Hello carlresberg,

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. It's my understanding that Raise to Speak isn't working as expected on your Apple Watch. You've done a great job trying to get this resolved! I recommend following the remaining steps below:
  1. Check the Internet connection on your Apple Watch.
  2. On your iPhone, see if Siri is turned on. Tap Settings > Siri & Search, then turn on Listen for "Hey Siri". On iPhone X, turn on Press Side Button for Siri. On iPhone 8 or earlier, turn on Press Home for Siri. Your Apple Watch mirrors your iPhone, so you don’t need to check your watch.
  3. On your Apple Watch, see if Hey Siri is turned on. Tap Settings > General > Siri.
  4. Restart your Apple Watch.
  5. On your iPhone, go to Settings > Siri & Search and turn off Listen for "Hey Siri." Then turn it on again.
  6. See if the microphone or speaker on your Apple Watch is blocked. For example, if your device has a protective case, remove it.
  7. If Siri doesn't speak on Apple Watch Series 3 or later, you might need to download its voice. The download happens when you’re on Wi-Fi and your Apple Watch is charging. To give the download time to complete, try charging your Apple Watch overnight. To check the status of the download on your Apple Watch, tap Settings > General > Siri, then scroll to Siri Voice. Learn which languages Siri speaks.

If Siri still doesn't respond, contact Apple Support.

Use Siri on your Apple Watch

Have a great day!

Ciao

I belive it won't help. There's nothing we (users) can do or guided to do by Apple support.

There's a need of a software fix to raise the mike sensitivity.

I could improve the situation by:

- ensuring that the watch is vertical/almost vertical to the ground

- speak loudy and very very close the mike, almost "kiss it" ! It's on the left side of the watch.

After learning about the vertical trick, raise to speak now invokes pretty consistently, so no problem with that. However, in more than 50% of the cases I experience exactly what you mention - after listening and converting to text correctly, my Series 3 watch just returns to the watch face instead of actually executing the command. Very annoying.

I also have problems with the feature "Raise to Speak" on my Apple Watch S4 and watchOS 5.1.1. I can see Siri write down my request and, immediately after, fade away on the watch face without any feedback. Resetting both Apple Watch S4 and the iPhone as new (no backup) does not help. It seems that the problem occurs mostly with the Italian or other languages other than English. At the same time on the watch I have no problem with Siri when called by "Hey Siri" or by pressing the digital crown. It is not possible to have this important feature completely non-functional on a such hi-end device. We have paid entirely and Apple must fix it as soon as possible.

Exactly the same setup and problem here !! 1 out of 3 or 4 times it works anyhow when lucky she starts writing what I say then vibrates and returns suddenly to the initial watch face, so annoying ! I hope today's update could resolve it (5.0.1), no way. Also I'm italian so it shouldn't have anything to do with the device language.

I'm trying now with your suggestion, to turn the watch-face vertical to the floor..well very very little improvement while I look so stupid by rotation by wrist in a so innatural way ! I won't like to break my wrist :-) and I won't do it in public !

I notified this issue to Apple via Feedback (as long as someone will give it a look).

Let's others please share if you experience the same issue.

Ciao

Hi Sterling, we should be "experienced" users so the attached instructions won't work for the issue we have got.

Perhaps you can report to the proper team for a fix.

I believe this may have to do with microphone "sensibility" perhaps to avoid unintentional activations, problem is this makes it unusable, so perhaps Apple can fix or add a sensitivity level or so, so the user can adjust according to the environment s/he normally in.

Thanks anyway

Gianni

Really appreciate the response. Maaaaybe a slight improvement but still no reaction from the watch in about 1/3 to 1/5 of the times with no easily discernible reson. Same exact positioning, silent environment, same volume of speaking. So it works, just poorly.

And btw: "Hey Siri" works 19 out of 20 times so it's not that the watch can't hear me or anything.
