IOS 12 supposed to allow 3rd party Maps on Apple Car play no apps available

Hello

IOS 12 just released yesterday on 9/17/18. I was so excited for the new update as it would allow 3rd party map apps to be used on car play. Even on the IOS 12 review what it is expected shows that it is to be available. When I connected my phone to my car, the 3rd party apps did not appear, only the regular apple maps. is there another step that I must take for the update or there a broken in the update? Please help.

Check your App Store. Google Maps issued an update yesterday, and you will also need to restart your device. After that, go to Settings>General>CarPlay, and click on your vehicle. You should see the new icons there. I can see mine, but I've not been able to connect to my wife's car, she is the only one with CarPlay in it.

I don't have access to CarPlay so this is just a supposition, but perhaps developers need to actively add support and update their apps before they become available, in which you might not see the change immediately, but as mapping apps are updated.
