Clean startup: eliminating unwanted apps when starting computer

I really should paste the solution to my computer because it happens so often. Anyway, what do I do to turn on my computer without having many unwanted apps appear on my screen? When I turn on my computer, I want to get to work. I don't want to have to waste time deleting/closing unwanted apps. Oh, there are no white dots below any of the icons in my dock. They used to be there when an app was on, but that is no longer the case.

When you Shutdown or Restart there is a dialog that opens. Uncheck the "Reopen windows…" box.

Also make sure you don't have apps set to open in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items.

FINAL WORD: Everything was NOT okay. When I turned my computer on the next day, all the icons in my dock, except FINDER and TRASH, were missing. I then spent maybe 40 minutes with Apple, and they had me input their code into terminal>quit>restart. They will be calling me back at 5:30, and I'll have to tell them that their fix didn't work. However, I finally fixed the problem with Onyx. I asked it to return everything to default settings (There may be hundreds of them). That did the trick. My icons now don't go away when I turn the computer off, but if the problem reoccurs, I won't mention it here. I'll just go to the nearest Amazon Genius bar. Oh, yes, I now have my dots under the icons, and I'm no longer bothered with unwanted apps upon starting up.

That window doesn't come up when booting up. It appears when you're about to shutdown or reboot:

Download and run Etrecheck. Copy and paste the results into your reply. Maybe you're in the habit of holding down the OPTION key when restarting or shutting down - doing this serves the purpose of BYPASSING the dialog that dialabrain has shown you. As he says, it has been there since forever.

Or maybe you turn the computer OFF with the brute force method of pressing and holding the power key. If that is the case, then be informed that it is NOT the proper way.

Notice the ellipsis at the end of the Shut Down and Restart menu items. They mean the command is not immediate, and will require further user intervention.

Old Toad,

I have the impression that you, or someone, or everyone, has already said this, but this time I followed the above words exactly. Unfortunately, that didn't help. There were still applications that had to be removed from my screen before I could get to work.

I might add that I've had this problem many times in the past, but the solution was always simple and fast. I'm going to sign off until tomorrow. Maybe Ettecheck has found the problem and the solution.
