Clean startup: eliminating unwanted apps when starting computer

I really should paste the solution to my computer because it happens so often. Anyway, what do I do to turn on my computer without having many unwanted apps appear on my screen? When I turn on my computer, I want to get to work. I don't want to have to waste time deleting/closing unwanted apps. Oh, there are no white dots below any of the icons in my dock. They used to be there when an app was on, but that is no longer the case.

When you Shutdown or Restart there is a dialog that opens. Uncheck the "Reopen windows…" box.

Also make sure you don't have apps set to open in System Preferences > Users & Groups > Login Items.
