Imessage and dual sim

With dual sim, will there be a way to use imessage capabilities on both lines? Or will the second line always be green bubble texts! It doesn't help me stop using two iphones if one of my lines will lose all the functions.

iPhone Xs Max, iOS 12

Send messages with iMessage and SMS/MMS

You can send messages with iMessage and use FaceTime on one phone line. To change which line uses iMessage, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings > Messages.
  2. Tap iMessage & FaceTime Line.
  3. Select the phone number you want to use.

User uploaded file

You can use SMS/MMS to send messages with either phone number.* You can switch phone numbers before you send an SMS/MMS message. Here's how:

  1. Open Messages.
  2. Tap the New button, in the upper right corner of the screen.
  3. Enter your contact's name.
  4. Tap the current phone number.
  5. Tap the number you want to use.

* Additional fees may apply. Check with your carrier.

I just updated to iOS 12.1.1 and transferred my AT&T SIM to eSIM on my iPhone XS. I then inserted my foreign SIM into the iPhone XS to play around with the iMessage and FaceTime setup. Like others, my old setup was to run each SIM in separate iPhones, which registered both my USA number and foreign number in iMessage and FaceTime. Unfortunately, as soon as I swap the preferred iMessage line on the iPhone XS then the other number is instantly deleted from iMessage and FaceTime. I then removed my foreign SIM from the iPhone XS and put it in my second iPhone. Both numbers were then registered in iMessage and FaceTime, as I'd like. But as soon as I put the foreign SIM back in my iPhone XS, the 2nd number was deleted from iMessage and FaceTime. This seems like a major oversight by Apple. Even if someone is running two USA phone numbers (say, a work phone number and a personal phone number), they would want to get iMessages and FaceTime calls for both numbers. Hopefully Apple sees the importance of fixing this issue in a future (soon) software update. Otherwise, there is no reason for me to have an iPhone XS (no reason for the dual SIM setup). A shame. I was really excited to have one phone for both numbers. I did submit a feature request to Apple but we'll see.

IN response to the reply, i have the two sim XS, one Esim is ATT US phone, the other sim is Canadian Rogers phone line.

u cannot chose both SIM cards to use I messages on. ONE can use I message and one has to just use SMS.

when u use SMS it appears as a green colored Texted and with that u cannot see if it was delivered or even read. Its like texting to an android phone. and Vice versa when some sends u a note they dont know the above.

In the US the US phone line ATT does not charge u for texting inside the US. But since i do a lot of work and need the Canadian phone number, I message is a no charge feature that The Canadian line can use from the US to Canada thru the apple network.

SO it is not possible to have both numbers run imessage. IF u have a found a way please share it with us.

Secondly, when using my US phone line if someone calls on my Canadian line it automatically goes to VM. There is no way of knowing after u finish your conversation that there was a missed call or even a voice message on the Canadian line.

its a hit and miss that i call forward my Canadian line if i know i am going to be on the US line for a period of time so i dont miss a call or at least i know it was missed (forward to my work number) in order to work around this.

IF I am on my Canadian line talking and someone calls on my US line and i finish my call, again there is no notice or notification that someone called on the US line and i missed the call or have a voice message.

hope this all makes sense but so far nothing has changed and i have had this phone since december

Problem solved with a trick. For the real SIM card I have two of them wit the same number and a second number with eSIM. So put one of the real SIM cards in your new iPhone XS and also the eSIM. Register your iMessage to the eSIM number. Now take the second real SIM card and put it in a second iPhone. Maybe from a friend. (I have an old one) Register iMessage here to the real SIM card with your second number witch is also in your iPhone X. And. Tada! It is working. You can receive iMessages from both numbers now and answer also as iMessage. . No more SMS.

This is a real issue. The only workaround I can think of right now is to get a multi-SIM subscription with my carrier (nanoSIM and one eSIM on the same number), and keep the nanoSIM in my old phone. Where I live this means an unnecessary monthly charge of ~$7 on my phone bill, as well as having to think about keeping the old phone turned on and charged so it keeps it from deregistering. A massive oversight on Apple's part...

Unfortunately, the only thing we can do is to submit feedback to Apple and hope they include support for both numbers in the next iOS releases (link below):

If you are planning on having your primary number line on the eSIM and using the physical sim tray for prepaid line (e.g., burner numbers/international carriers sims) just know that iMessage will not work with your primary number while the physical sim tray is empty. This is some weird glitch/software design. I have escalated it up to the "engineers team" with apples customer service and no one seems to have a solution.

So i read this thread and yes this is quite annoying. I also have an ATT esim and Rogers physical sim. I have VVM on ATT and regular voicemail on Rogers. And yes, Rogers voicemails don't appear, so i do have to call in to see if i have a VM. Annoying, but not the end of the world, what's more annoying is the dual iMessage number issue. When i had 2 phones it was a non issue and was able to use either of the numbers on either of the phones. Last but not least, because I am using my Canadian Rogers number as iMessage number my ATT numbers sync feature doesn't work (well its not enabled). Numbers sync is actually such a good feature and before i was able to use my iPad, Mac as a phone and text when phone was not near by or in fact never even on, but now i can't.

I love apples canned response. As the person above stated you can use iMessage for the number not on the SIM that has data at that present time. The issue is simple. Allow iMessage from both SIM cards period. Also drop voicemails from both lines and indicate which line the VM is from. Why was this overlooked? I’m back to using two phones and was upsold a phone that I didn’t need. I’m sure an iOS release will come at some point.
