Imessage and dual sim

With dual sim, will there be a way to use imessage capabilities on both lines? Or will the second line always be green bubble texts! It doesn't help me stop using two iphones if one of my lines will lose all the functions.

iPhone Xs Max, iOS 12

Send messages with iMessage and SMS/MMS

You can send messages with iMessage and use FaceTime on one phone line. To change which line uses iMessage, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Settings > Messages.
  2. Tap iMessage & FaceTime Line.
  3. Select the phone number you want to use.

You can use SMS/MMS to send messages with either phone number.* You can switch phone numbers before you send an SMS/MMS message. Here's how:

  1. Open Messages.
  2. Tap the New button, in the upper right corner of the screen.
  3. Enter your contact's name.
  4. Tap the current phone number.
  5. Tap the number you want to use.

* Additional fees may apply. Check with your carrier.

Just discovered this problem as well. Using two numbers from two different countries (UK and France). Previously on two phones - iMessages to either number arrived on either phone, and on my iPad. Now that both numbers are on one phone, only the people I contact using the default number get them as iMessage, the others get an SMS.

This is absurd and counter-intuitive. I hope the next iOS release fixes that! It‘s a huge handicap and defies the purpose of having a dual SIM phone.

That is completely incorrect. Please if you don't know what you are talking about don't confuse others.

Esim does have data, any sim card can have data. You can have data from sim 1 and iMessage from sim 2 or vice versa. This has nothing to do with it. In fact you can have data disabled from both but be on wifi and still have iMessage from either of the numbers working.

This is an iOS issue, which can be resolved quite easily. Yes, you need data, but it doesnt matter what data to have iMessage working. iMessage activates via short message codes so as long as you have 2 active sims and your carrier supports those short message codes that apple uses then there would be no problem to have dual iMessage.

This issue with only enabling iMessage on one SIM on a dual SIM model seems worse than I thought. Not only can’t I use iMessage with my secondary number (the primary is set for iMessage/FaceTime), but people who use an iPhone can’t contact me by text message on this secondary number. Their iPhone detects I am using an iPhone and wants to use iMessage and my iPhone is not enabling the number so the iMessage never arrives. Can anybody confirm this or am I doing something wrong and there is a way around this? This is really frustrating and completely defeats the purpose of a dial SIM iPhone

I have observed that the second line will receive SMSs, but no iMessages. I have de-registered the second line from iMessage Deregister and Turn Off iMessage - Apple Support, and people text me like normal. iPhone, Android, regular flip phones, whatever. Since my second line is my work line, I don't care. I rarely send anything by text anyhow.

The one feature I miss from huawei and samsung devices, is the dual apps. I liked having 2 separate what'sApp. I some asian customers insisting on sending me what's app messages. Giving them my personal what's app is not an option for me. That duplicate app feature is really useful. That's the only think that I miss.

So in short, if deregistered, other iPhones should not try to send over iMessage, but should be able to send to you text messages via SMS.

Good luck.

Personal usage coming from an Android doesn’t reference the fact that we are talking about limiting the capabilities and usage of an iPhone. Even if the iPhone has dual SIMs, that doesn’t warrant Apple to restrict usage to one number (sim) to use iMessage or FaceTime. This to me is a no brainer. I am still now after using the XR and XS Max still using 2 phones as a result. Also, I do believe there should be a dual app capability as well, hence the previous poster talking about WhatsApp. There is still a long way to go before this “one phone, two number” solution is seamless.
