Stock app after iOS 12 update

That depends on how many people can trace the problem to IPv6. I understand your reluctance to mess with a working router. I also suspect that people who have IPv6 are today fall into two main categories, the smaller group is those people like me who have set it up deliberately, the larger is those people that have IPv6 because it's the default configuration from their router and their ISP. Out of curiosity are you on Comcast or AT&T? If so, are you using their router to get your internet? I ask because those are the two major ISPs rolling IPv6 today. If both of those are true, you might be able to have their technical support help you through disabling IPv6 on the router to test. I do say that somewhat tongue-in-cheek because tech support calls have their own ring in Dante's Inferno.

I posted the level of technical detail that I did because its helpful to Apple to see a bunch of posts that say: "The iOS 12 Stocks App fails for me and I do have an IPv6 connection." It's even more helpful if one could also say: "When I disable my IPv6 connection the Stocks App works fine." But if enough people make only the first statement I think that it does give Apple something to look into.

I also have faith that Apple keeps up with these forums periodically and I'm sure that they want the App to work properly for everyone.

Let's wait and see what happens.

You could try the process again but with iTunes (if you have a computer), that would then rule out if it’s something to do with the OTA method, but if you don’t setup as “New” you could be reimporting the problem back!

If you do try, the iPad might be the best one to start with, just a thought.

Haven’t seen that issue on my X or iPad Mini 2 yet, just a thought, but might help if those affected list type of device, may be some link can be found. FWIW I upgraded via iTunes for both, not sure if that has any bearing.

I find the stock up to be more sluggish since the update to iOS 12 as well.

But more troubling that this is not only is the "Business News" taking over the stock app, but there are no longer the OTHER news sources available as they were prior to the iOS 12 update. This is HIGHLY annoying! I have a work iPhone that has not upgraded and I am able to access far more current news resources as well as a greater quantity of news resources from a variety of sources with the pre-iOS 12 stock tracker.

I would SO APPRECIATE any possible fix to this problem!

I am having the same issue on my iPhone 7+ as well! Did all the trouble-shooting (e.g. soft/hard reset, uninstall & reinstall etc) and problem still persists.

I've got the same issue. I was able to resolve it but my solution is technical and may not be generally reproducible.

From my experimentation I found that the problem is related to IPv6. I disabled connectivity to the Apple Stocks/News servers over IPv6 and the problem was resolved. I was able to confirm this on my iPad, my iPhone 6S and my work iPhone 7. I was not able to narrow it down the actual issue. I took a few packet captures this morning and connectivity to the Apple Stocks/News servers over IPv6 seems fine. But the communications are all encrypted with SSL as they should be so I can't look into it further. E.g. my iPad has no trouble communicating with the Apple Stocks/News servers over IPv6 but I can't see what data they are exchanging so I don't know why iPad::Stocks.App is not working with the Apple servers over IPv6.

Diagnosis

For you to be experiencing the same issue that I am, you must have IPv6. That's up to your network provider and your router configuration. For example Comcast has native IPv6 across large parts of their footprint today. Using IPv6 on Comcast is just a matter of configuring it on your router.

To tell if you have IPv6 on your phone or iPad go to:

Setting -> WiFi

Tap the info button, the circled "i", on the checked and active network connection to bring up information about your internet connection. There will be a section for IPv4 marked "IPV4 Address" in grey. If you scroll down there may be a similar section marked "IPv6 Address". If you have IP Addresses, my iPad shows "2 Addresses" then you have an IPv6 connection on your device.

Advanced Diagnosis

If you have IPv6 its quite likely that you enabled it either by enabling SLAAC or DHCPv6 at your router. Disable SLAAC and DHCPv6. Reboot your iPad or iPhone to purge the IPv6 configuration and test Stocks. If it works, you are seeing the same thing that I am.

Technical

I get IPv6 via a Hurricane Electric Tunnel. This can sometimes cause problems with an IPv6 function called Path MTU discovery since my v6 packets have to ride in IPv4 packets to a gateway in New York City. This limits their size; MTU means "maximum transmission unit"; in ways that some providers don't expect. Being technical, some providers expect an MTU of 1500 bytes, because tunneled packets are encapsulated within IPv4, their MTU is 1480. It's important to note that this is a solved problem in IPv6 that only crops up where there is the occasional misconfiguration. At first I suspected an MTU issue but my packet captures say that that's not the issue.

Wow! Such an amazingly detailed reply! I'm so appreciative to at least hear that I'm not crazy, there really IS a problem here. You are correct in your line: "If you have IP Addresses, my iPad shows "2 Addresses" then you have an IPv6 connection on your device." However I get all confused and dumb when it comes to mucking around with router settings.

Is it too much to ask the Apple folks to take note of this glitch and find a workaround to fix it easy-peasy for dummies like me? I really miss the functionality of the old pre-iOS 12 stock app. The new one is nearly worthless to me and I've been experimenting with alternative apps and nothing comes close to the old pre-iOS 12 stock app.
