Gray screen with instructions to reboot appears on booting installer

I am trying to install snow leopard on a Mac Pro (2008). I erased the hard drive, inserted the snow leopard install disc and doubled clicked on the install icon. The computer restarts using the install disc but then a gray screen appears with instructions to manually shut down with the front button then restart. After I do this the same thing happens and never begins the install process. I would appreciate any recommendations. Thanks very much.

I tried holding down the option and same thing. I found something interesting - I have a 2008 Mac Book and snow leopard installed fine. I installed it on a USB drive using that computer and the Mac Book was able to boot from it. Then I tried to boot the Mac Pro from the USB drive and the same grey screen thing happened. I thought a 2008 Mac Pro would boot from from Snow leopard but maybe something is missing. I was able to install Lion and it works fine so will live it at that. Thanks.
