Family share is the fix. Apple came out with that a while ago.

Having the exact same experience here. Without question, this issue began when I “upgraded” to iOS12. This issue has been devastating and needs to be resolved ASAP. I depend upon iMessage and can no longer trust/depend on the tool to send messages to the proper person. In the same way, I cannot be sure from whom texts are actually being sent.
And I have manually removed all ties to the former Apple ID. So it’s still a bug as nobody wants it.
That’s what their support person said to me. So I hope so.
We will see. I’ll bet within a week there is an update to fix what is clearly a bug.
Hello MkinItBetta,
I tried it and it's working. Before you delete those text messages, backup your phone and do a restore, and you should have all those messages back.
How many days will it work though... :/
Don’t do what? All I was saying is how it was effecting my phones and if the only “solution” is separate Apple IDs, then I will find a different way to communicate with my family.
Thank you so much for sharing. This worked to resolve my issue. I had to delete the text that was combing and start again with a new text for each person
You are very welcome. Glad it's working for you too.
I am hoping it will keep working 🙂. I just did it a few hours ago and so far no issues. I will submit a status report after a few days
Only worked overnight for me
This is seriously distressing when I’m texting one child as to where he is the other one is getting the messages.

Deleting the text messages that were combing and starting again worked initially, but the next day they have combined again. Just an FYI
This is happening to me too with my son and my wife. Called Apport Support but no remedy yet. Hope they fix in an update.
Some "fixes" seem to work for a few hours, but then it combines again, has this worked for several days?
Why is iMessage combining two contacts into one thread. I can only text back the last one that messaged me. This started with iOS 12
