Having the exact same experience here. Without question, this issue began when I “upgraded” to iOS12. This issue has been devastating and needs to be resolved ASAP. I depend upon iMessage and can no longer trust/depend on the tool to send messages to the proper person. In the same way, I cannot be sure from whom texts are actually being sent.

Deleted the "Frankenstein chat" that started all of this. Gosh, I hope this is the end of it.
Cant believe they allowed this problem to persist despite the multiple complaints received during beta testing.
And do you work for Apple and know for sure that this isn’t a bug that they aren’t going to fix in a few days or weeks?
I didn't say it was. Allowing a child under 13 to use an account belonging to an adult is illegal.

Any updates on your situation? I backed up my messages to the new Max and 2 of my friends with totally separate information are being combined.

Do you mean to just go to settings and switch the green button to off? Is that what you mean by deactivating?
Babypj: Thanks for the suggested troubleshooting idea but it does not permanently correct the issue. That was one of the first things the apple support engineer suggested we try.
Don't use the same AppleID for more than one person.
Get everyone their own and use Family Sharing.
Yes that is what I did
Why is iMessage combining two contacts into one thread. I can only text back the last one that messaged me. This started with iOS 12
