Not true. Most families, especially with small children, do indeed share.

Having the exact same experience here. Without question, this issue began when I “upgraded” to iOS12. This issue has been devastating and needs to be resolved ASAP. I depend upon iMessage and can no longer trust/depend on the tool to send messages to the proper person. In the same way, I cannot be sure from whom texts are actually being sent.

Why you people so intense and emotional about separate Apple ID’s. Most families share.
How do you know that is true? Where did you get your data? Or are you guessing.
I tried this but when my daughter replies it goes to the original thread. So frustrating.
Try going to contacts, edit the contact and go to the bottom to see if they are linked. If they’re linked, try unlinking them. I have no idea if this will work But it’s worth a try.
You're correct that it's not a solution. It's merely a workaround. Apple needs to come up with a solution, just as it has in the past when other nasty surprises have arisen with iOS updates.
Your post doesn't say to sign back in with your Apple ID for iMessage after signing out, wouldn't you need to do that for iMessage to function? Thanks for posting your solution.
Hopefully by putting out a definitive "works as designed" statement.
Don't share AppleIDs, ever.
Same here;(
Hope there will be a fix soon, because this is not working out great!
+1
This is actually annoying enough that I am thinking of switching to an android after being a loyal Iphone user for YEARS. I cannot have myself and my college daughter linked for text messages
It seems like this issue has hit the mainstream press, so expect some action soon...
Send them to this thread!!!

They are causing your problem. Apple can not "fix" it.
I’ve got this problem too 😐
Please enlighten us how this is a “feature.”
[Hint: it’s not a feature, it’s a flaw.]
Why is iMessage combining two contacts into one thread. I can only text back the last one that messaged me. This started with iOS 12
