Having the exact same experience here. Without question, this issue began when I “upgraded” to iOS12. This issue has been devastating and needs to be resolved ASAP. I depend upon iMessage and can no longer trust/depend on the tool to send messages to the proper person. In the same way, I cannot be sure from whom texts are actually being sent.

Philly you're still missing the point - I haven't ignored "proper procedures" and yet it's a flaw for me. Apple just made their iMessage app unreliable for this very reason.
They sure did, if that's what you want to call it. And? My phone is still merging their messages into one thread on my phone.... Not theirs!
Agreed. It could have been as simple as a pop up saying "it looks like John and Sue may be the same person, would you like to merge"?
Are you serious? Not trade messages with them over an Apple mis-step? Wow! We get it Philly_Phan, people are not supposed to share Apple ID's. Here's the problem though -- They do!
You have yet to answer my (or anyone else's) question...what exactly is the "feature" to which you refer?
I would suggest, instead, that Apple is inadvertently “nudging” its customers out the door and over to Android.

Read the IOS release notes.

You should use whatever smartphone meets your requirements.
Or to use another texting app 🙄
Yes! As well as people like Philly_Phan.

I use my iPhone the way that Apple intended it to be used and I've never had problems. Why does that bother you?
I know right, I’m actually getting a kick outa him (or her 🏻♂) they have a snarky reply to everything posted across this realm
The good thing about your continuous reply’s is that this thread is staying at the top of the forums. We appreciate your prompt response to our concerns.
...you really don't know.
Why is iMessage combining two contacts into one thread. I can only text back the last one that messaged me. This started with iOS 12
