Family sharing is not the answer for many people also. Photo syncing is practically non existent in family share. Quite frankly family share is half baked at best.

Having the exact same experience here. Without question, this issue began when I “upgraded” to iOS12. This issue has been devastating and needs to be resolved ASAP. I depend upon iMessage and can no longer trust/depend on the tool to send messages to the proper person. In the same way, I cannot be sure from whom texts are actually being sent.
This is exactly what we are experiencing. It’s caused chaos in our home with the merging of contacts and messages. It’s embarrassing!
This is happening to me and it is 2 family members. None of us share the same Apple ID nor do we share the same email or phone number. Very frustrating!
I have had individual Apple IDs across all phones on my account for several months. This problem only arose after IOS 12.
This issue has been reported by Apple, and are under current investigation.
My merged contacts are now gone from my contact list and will not save them when re-entered....
I wouldn't suggest sharing an Apple ID on iOS 12. I would recommend everyone has their own Apple ID.

We all use the same apple account.
Apple can't fix that. You have to do it.
Do YOU share an ID with anyone? Does she?
That's precisely why work/personal phones should have different IDs, one assigned to John Doe and the other assigned to John Q. Doe.
We continue to have the problem no matter how many times we delete the message thread, delete contacts, etc. I’m so frustrated with iOS 12 and this problem!
What about going back to IOS 11 until Apple comes up with a fix? Is that possible?
iOS 12.0.1 is out. Still no fix nor an effective and repeatable workaround for this issue. Apple needs to give this issue the attention it deserves...and soon.
I'd say that's why one has the option to select which devices and addresses share messages in the Settings, where it's always been. So, I really think this is a bug.
I have friends who the same Apple ID for their entire family, they’ve updated, and they’re not experiencing this problem. Screams bug to me.
Why is iMessage combining two contacts into one thread. I can only text back the last one that messaged me. This started with iOS 12
