Having the exact same experience here. Without question, this issue began when I “upgraded” to iOS12. This issue has been devastating and needs to be resolved ASAP. I depend upon iMessage and can no longer trust/depend on the tool to send messages to the proper person. In the same way, I cannot be sure from whom texts are actually being sent.
...and after 5 days strings merging again on some phones...Apple if you are monitoring this, hopefully you’re working on it. Would be great to have any sort of acknowledgement, fix timeline, etc.
I’m getting the same thing as well. I set up different Apple IDs for the family and still get the same issue.

Hmmm. Does anyone else agree that 12.0.1 fixes this problem? There has certainly not been any acknowledgement in the release notes. I am cautiously optimistic, however.

The issue affects only those iPhones that were not configured according to Apple's recommendations.
Apple has NEVER supported ID sharing.
Believe what you will.
They may have never supported it, but they didn't stop it from happening. This is apples issue not the millions of people - mostly family's (before home share was out) that did this.

I have the same problem. I have turned messages off and on, logged out, and restarted more times than I can count. Please advise as soon as possible. HELP!!!
I upgraded my wife's phone to 12.0.1 last night and that did not fix the problem.
Why is iMessage combining two contacts into one thread. I can only text back the last one that messaged me. This started with iOS 12
