this really is bizarre that this is happening to so many and yet not for others.

I also contacted support. My issue was escalated to a supervisor. She’s been in contact with me yesterday and today. Based on my voice memos not showing up in iCloud, she is sending the issue to their engineers with a follow up call on Monday.

Ok, good to know the notes thing worked.

I am sorry to say it is probably lost because it was never saved in the first place. If it was never saved then there is nothing to retrieve. I even did my last recording in airplane mode so nothing would interrupt the process and it still failed to save (actually, I had no save/done option). This issue has caused me severe problems and I have lost critical info I can never recreate.

I sent screen shots to Apple, called, DM'ed, and emailed, but no response. It is a result of the latest update as far as I can tell. How can you screw up a simple recording app this badly?

Mine do not even show up in a search. The entire conversation is recorded (total of 6 hrs for me) and then there is no option to save it (the done button). These recordings are gone. I have talked to Apple and they told me they are gone but offered no explanation and acted like I am the only one with this problem. I emailed them and sent 4 DM's over Twitter and received no response. I downloaded a new app that is great and RELIABLE for now as I look at Samsungs.

I don't know if yours are recoverable considering they show up in a search.

I have over 1,000 hours recorded over the past 2 years and saved with no problem. This is new to the 12 update.

I had exactly the same problem yesterday. A 3 hour recording I needed in order to cite someone literally: it’s just gone. The consequences for my work are very serious.

I contacted the Apple helpdesk, they have no idea and couldn’t help at all. What frustrates me most is that apparently the problem is known since more than one month, and 149 people have already encountered the same problem. But still nothing is done. The bug persists, and instead of warning people about the instability of the voice memo app under iOS12, Apple keeps on encouraging people to update their system to iOS12.

If they just would have reacted earlier I and at least 148 other people wouldn’t be in such a mess.

Same situation as everyone else. 3 hour voice memo recording taken in Airplane mode on iOS 12. Not available in the voice memos app but IS visible in the springboard search.

BOLLOCKS. Also like everyone else, this recording was priceless and irreplaceable. As a software developer and project manager myself it's unforgivable that this app could have been released with such a major bug.

It's obviously not retrievable through the iOS functions so downloading some data recovery tools. Will have a bash and see if some kind of sector-by-sector examination finds it and it's got decent integrity. Will let you all know if I have any luck.

There are now multiple ways to either lose or mistakenly erase your voice memos recordings. I lost a one-hour interview with a client. Not devastating, but annoying. Frankly I'm glad it alerted me, so I could download an app that will do a better job. Apple's new update on any iphone (I've got a 6) has this problem. I know another person who had the same experience I did. When the recording was over, no screen instructions or intuitive configuration led the way to saving the recording. So I hit the triangular button thinking that was safe. Wrong--it erased the recording and instantly restarted at 0:00. Crazy. But like I said, others have this or similar experiences with the new updates. Crazy.

Amazing and horrible decline is ease of use and utility. I have used Voice Memos for years. I have an iPhone 6, ok a little older but updated software, and the new app. Before -- easy, perfectly intuitive and never lost a file. Recorded all critical interviews for my books on it. Now, a mystery, not intuitive and I just recorded an interview. When I do a quick mic check record, I just hit the red button and it stops and saves. After a while, maybe after the security feature for passcode kicks in, I dunno, it goes to a screen where it asks me to resume. I don't want to resume. I want to save the **** thing. Usually i can just hit the Home button and reopen and then save. Bad solution but no option. This morning, I lost the interview. I do try to swipe up and for some reason, that works only sometimes. I have been using Apple's intuitive interfaces since 1981. This is disappointing - I am literally considering switching off the platform after all these years after this experience.

Please don’t get your hopes up. If it didn’t save, it’s gone. Some people have been able to retrieve it if it saved, but it’s been rare. I would recommend not using Voice Memos and download another app that records. I did that after losing two valuable, irreplaceable recordings and I didn’t look back. Apple really screwed the pooch on this one.

There are better alternatives out there that are reliable.

That’s awesome! It works for recordings that were saved and lost. Unfortunately, a huge problem with the frigged up update on 12.1 is that the recording is never saved in the first place so there is literally nothing to recover. The app is failing to save at all.

I’m really glad this worked for you. This issue has been a real problem for a lot of people. The good part is I found an even better app to do my recordings. They are too important to trust Apple again.

I had made a call with Apple and spoken to an engineer after the usual customer agent escalated higher up. Apparently it’s a bug that they still had not solved !

Better use a 3rd party voice recorder.

I’m seriously thinking of jumping ship to android.
