FAT32 USB Drive Capacity Overstated?

When checking the capacity and free space on a USB drive, if I select the file info. it suggest this for a 16GB nominal capacity USB stick:


User uploaded file


How is there 38.1GB "available"?

That’s a nice picture. It clearly shows where the error comes from. It is calculating space available from free space + purgeable. If you do the match, the first screenshow shows the same thing.


The problem is that the “purgeable” value comes from Spotlight, the source of most of the inaccurate file system information. What’s even scarier is that it Spotlight is so deeply embedded into the operating system that you could almost call it spotlightOS.
