Bluetooth symbol is not visible in the status bar after updating to iOS 12

After updating my iPhone SE to iOS 12, I am not able to see the bluetooth symbol in the status bar through which I can be aware whether the bluetooth is turned on or not. It is not visible even when paired to my JBL bluetooth speaker. Please let me know if there is any way of making the symbol visible in the status bar.

For me, this is a practical issue -- it's not a mater of "ownership" or anything like that.

The old icon at the top of the iPad told me more than whether or not Bluetooth is enabled. (I agree with whoever said there's no reason for it ever not to be enabled.) It also told me whether my Bluetooth device was actually CONNECTED.

I use my iPad as a musician, to read music when I perform concerts. Sometimes my Bluetooth foot pedal does not connect properly, either for reasons of proximity or exact placement, or because it has been inactive for some period of time; and it's essential for me to know that before I start performing a piece of music. I can find out by unnecessarily flipping a page back and forth, but that is distracting and breaks my concentration. The old symbol at the top was a much better indicator, and I wish they would bring it back.
