Would iMessage still work on my Mac or iPad if I switch to a non-iPhone

I use iMessage on my Mac and iPad as well as, obviously, my iPhone, but if I were to buy a different phone (Android, Samsung, etc), would the text message forwarding still work (Ignoring the fact that SMS forwarding only works about 10-30% of the time to begin with)? Meaning could I still send messages from my Mac or iPad as I do now? Is it linked to my phone number or the iPhone, I guess is what I'm asking.

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2012), iOS 12, null

iMessages (to other iMessage users) would work. SMS would not. In order to send an SMS from an iPad or Mac, those devices must be connected to an iPhone.
