iOS 12 Bluetooth Uconnect issue

I updated my iPhone 7 to iOS 12, and immediately noticed that there is now a significant lag in song selection when connected to bluetooth in my car's Uconnect head unit. When a new song plays, the song run time is frozen for exactly 30 seconds while the song plays. If I try to toggle next/last track selection using the car's audio controls during this time, nothing happens until the 30 seconds pass, then it changes to the next song. It happens very consistently now with every new song that plays. Also, during some songs it'll do this freeze for 30 seconds where song navigation won't trigger.

Can't overstate how annoying this is. Has anyone else experienced this?

This issue started for me after I upgraded Uconnect to 17.43.01 on my '15 Grand Cherokee on 10/2. I had iOS 12 on my phone already, and I did not have the delay before the Uconnect update. The delay in the radio controlling the phone usually was 30 seconds, but sometimes would be better. There was no change in behavior with the 12.0.1 iOS update.

I did a hard reset of the phone today (vol up, vol down, then hold the power button), and now the issue is almost gone. I did have one instance of a delay at the beginning of the pairing, but it went away after a song or two. It's possible that a hard reset (not a power off) will help some of you.

It will be interesting to see what iOS 12.1 will bring.

I agree that repairing the device is a temporary fix. I have done that twice. I have tried closing the music app and even rebooting the phone. I can usually get it to play, but it is painful when trying to switch songs. It will not advance, but the current song keeps playing. Then about 30 sec to a minute later it will advance songs. The track time also quits working. If I try to advance too many times, it eventually quits playing all together. I ether have to turn bluetooth off and back on, or turn the radio off and back on. I also have problems browsing playlists and switching playlists. As I have stated before I made sure my radio is up to date. I did also email Uconnect and they did state there is an issue with IOS 12. Hopefully Uconnect and Apple can figure this out soon. Does anyone know if Apple has acknowledged the issue? Does anyone if they are willing to give any timelines of the fix?

Just so I guys are aware, the latest (as of December 29) ios public beta seems to have sorted out the issues we were all having with Bluetooth.

As of right now, the initial track change takes about 15 seconds but then everything seems to work normally.

I didn't have to re-pair my phone or anything and re-pairing it after the fact did not change the operation.

This is on the current 8.4 (precarplay) head units at the latest firmware.

Thought you'd want to know.

Same issue here since iphone 6 with iOS 12 on a 2012 RAM 2500. We've got 5 iphones in my house and all of them do this after iOS 12. My friend has a Galaxy Note9 and she doesn't have any issues when connected to the truck.

I've been watching this thread for months, hoping for a resolution but no luck. I've got a couple older android phones lying around so loaded one up with songs. No issues at all. Father's Day is coming up so I think I'll be going to a Google Pixel 3a. Very unhappy with the support.

Yea I don’t think this will ever be resolved for our generation hardware. I’ve heard from FCA engineers state that there’s basically nothing more they can do. As the system works fine for the newer Uconnect head units, I don’t think they’re going to put too much more effort into this gen head unit. Unfortunate. Let’s hope iOS 13 somehow makes it work again. Not holding my breath.

So... mixed results for me. Here's the breakdown:

  • Updated my iPhone while at work.
  • Got in my car for my 1-Hr commute home.
  • First track comes on and it's a comedy track. I let it play for a minute and then hit next/skip on the steering wheel... *wait*... *wait*... *wait*... okay, I guess the lag is still here - "Oh, well...!"
  • So I get on the road and for the ENTIRE remainder of my +1 hour commute, it did **NOT** lag anymore. EVERY track-skip worked just fine... for a whole hour... I kept trying it, maybe 50-60 times total just to keep testing it - maybe ONCE it lagged for a full second, but otherwise VERY responsive.
    AWESOME!
  • I stop to gas-up right around the corner from my house - so, car is turned off.
  • I get back in and pull out of gas station. Don't like the song that's on. Hit track-skip. *wait*... *wait*... *wait*... Okay... maybe it's an issue within the first several minutes of startup.
  • I am at the light waiting for the green. Try skipping the tracks a few more times, and now it's about a 50/50 shot... sometimes instant, sometimes lag of up to 15-20 seconds.
  • I get home, so no more testing.
  • This morning's commute: I get in the car... let the song that's playing play for a couple minutes before trying to "skip". Press the track-skip button on the steering wheel and... *wait*... *wait*... *wait*... (sigh).

Basically, my commute was similar to the tail-end of yesterday... about 60%-70% of the time, it skips to next track fairly quickly... but the remaining 30%-40% it lags anywhere between 5 seconds and as long as a full minute.

Apparently that 1-hour span of responsiveness was the fluke.

So, we wait for the next iOS update, I guess. 😀

I am having the same exact issue. Mine lasts anywhere from 30 seconds to almost a minute. And just like you described...while it's waiting to change the track there is nothing you can do. The only thing I did notice is if you change the track on the phone itself it works every single time. But that's a no go since Georgia is a hands free/no hands on the phone at all state. Seems like Apple didn't test this very much with the UConnect system. I was really looking forward to the new iOS and the new designed iPhone. Guess I'll have to go back to my Android for the time being until a fix is released.

I have a 13 Dodge Dart ralley, I don’t have the navigations and on call on my uconnect just have the regular edition and ever since I’ve updated my iPhone 8 Plus to ios12 the lag is unbelievable, most of the time it don’t pull up my whole song playlist on my screen half of song playlist is just gray then you have to press on a song in the gray for the other half to load and sometimes it don’t even let you switch to another song until like 30 seconds when it’s done lagging, uconnext needs to come out with a update ASAP this is annoying

Yeah that's not accurate overall, though it may be the case for you. My issues started on my iPhone 8 during the iOS 12 beta period, and continue with my iPhone XS. Both phones work in my truck without any issues about 10-15% of the time, but only until the ignition is turned off. The next time I'm in the truck, it'll stop working again and I can just look forward to the next time it randomly decides to work the way it should.

I have not had any luck. I called Uconnect customer support yesterday, after the first agent transferred me to SeriousXM and I was then transferred back to Uconnect, the agent told me that there is a "known issue" with Uconnects software and Apples 12.1 and 12.1.1. He couldn't tell me exactly what the issues are and/or a timeline to rectify the issue. I AM NOT HAPPY!!!

I have the same issue. It has been going on for a few months now. That makes sense it linked to IOS 12. I have updated my Uconnect Radio to the latest version. I have a 2016 RAM 1500 with the 8.4an radio. It is frustrating. I have tried using the USB connection and it is better, but still has some issue. I ordered a 4 inch lighting cable and I am going to try just leaving it plugged in the console.

I have no doubt it’ll get resolved, eventually, with a future iteration of iOS update. A similar issue occurred with iOS 11, where track selection took 8 seconds or so. Uconnect just needs to be prepared for Apple software releases and ramp up support accordingly.

For the record - I tried on a ‘19 Ram and Grand Cherokee, and it worked flawlessly. So there is some issue with older Uconnect head units and how it talks to iOS 12.
