iOS 12 Bluetooth Uconnect issue

I updated my iPhone 7 to iOS 12, and immediately noticed that there is now a significant lag in song selection when connected to bluetooth in my car's Uconnect head unit. When a new song plays, the song run time is frozen for exactly 30 seconds while the song plays. If I try to toggle next/last track selection using the car's audio controls during this time, nothing happens until the 30 seconds pass, then it changes to the next song. It happens very consistently now with every new song that plays. Also, during some songs it'll do this freeze for 30 seconds where song navigation won't trigger.

Can't overstate how annoying this is. Has anyone else experienced this?

So I was FINALLY able to connect my iPhone X to my 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 8.4/Nav Uconnect this weekend. I went into Bluetooth settings and clicked the "info" button next to Uconnect and selected, "Forget this Device", then turned off Bluetooth all together. Then I switched BT back on and selected Uconnect at the bottom of the screen. Then I was able to pair my iPhone X to my Uconnect. I am on iOS 12.1.1 and the latest Uconnect update.

Deleting the devise from Bluetooth and the Uconnect works for me too but is only a short term solution. The problem returns after a few days at most. I also updated my Uconnect at the dealership. I’m convinced this is an IOS issue. We can only hope it gets rectified in future updates as this is causing issues for lots of people.

I agree that repairing the device is a temporary fix. I have done that twice. I have tried closing the music app and even rebooting the phone. I can usually get it to play, but it is painful when trying to switch songs. It will not advance, but the current song keeps playing. Then about 30 sec to a minute later it will advance songs. The track time also quits working. If I try to advance too many times, it eventually quits playing all together. I ether have to turn bluetooth off and back on, or turn the radio off and back on. I also have problems browsing playlists and switching playlists. As I have stated before I made sure my radio is up to date. I did also email Uconnect and they did state there is an issue with IOS 12. Hopefully Uconnect and Apple can figure this out soon. Does anyone know if Apple has acknowledged the issue? Does anyone if they are willing to give any timelines of the fix?

That does not sound too promising. If this has happened since the release of ios 12 then this must not be a big priority. Uconnect is in all of Chrysler vehicles. It is not like this is in just one vehicle lineup. I supposed the answer is I could get a newer vehicle with Apple Car Play. I am not going to spend that kind of money just to get my music to play in my car. The radio in my truck is fully integrated, so I cannot look at aftermarket head units. I will address this with my dealer, but I don't think they will be able to do much. I don't think replacing parts will fix the issue. I doubt RAM or the dealership will want to pay to upgrade the radio to a newer version with Apple Car play to remedy the issue. I don't even know if they can do that. Hopefully enough people will voice their complaints and Apply will prioritize this. First priority when releasing new OS's should be backwards compatibility, especially with integrated vehicle radios. I am invested in Apple. I have iPhone and Apple Music. If this does not work, I don't have much other options.

I have no doubt it’ll get resolved, eventually, with a future iteration of iOS update. A similar issue occurred with iOS 11, where track selection took 8 seconds or so. Uconnect just needs to be prepared for Apple software releases and ramp up support accordingly.

For the record - I tried on a ‘19 Ram and Grand Cherokee, and it worked flawlessly. So there is some issue with older Uconnect head units and how it talks to iOS 12.

Do you know if there are issues with units that have Apple Car Play? I cannot remember which year they introduced it, if it was '17 or '18. I assume it is a shot in the dark getting RAM to upgrade mine to one of those versions. That is if there is no issues. I don't even know if the screen would be the same, but the box would just be different.

I was curious, so I call Crutchfield to see what options there is. I figured it would be extremely expensive to get all the factory options to still work. I was worried about Climate Control, Backup Camera, XM, USB port, steering wheel controls, and Aux port. It is not cheap, but they did put a package together to keep all that and include Apple Car Play. It was around $700 for everything. I did not purchase it. There was other options but I would loose factory features. I am going to try and just plug my iPhone into the USB and see if that will work better for now. I may look at a new head unit down the road if Apple and Uconnect cannot get this fixed.

I did talk with Chrysler customer support last night. They are going to open a case, and have a Uconnect case manager call me in a few days. They want to work with my dealer and determine that all components are running the correct software versions. They also stated there could be some parts that need replaced. I will provide an update when I know more.

Update: Since using the Phone screen for about 5 days now while streaming music through bluetooth from my phone, I haven't had any freezing or delays. As soon as I switch back to the Media screen, after a few song changes it will start to freeze again. Switching back to the phone screen and waiting a few minutes usually resolves the freezing. iOS 12.1.1 / iPhone 6s

I cannot stress enough how annoying this is and how much more dangerous it makes the driving experience.. I have resorted to having to look down at my phone to change songs on my phone in order to avoid this problem! I'm not sure how this feature works but today I tried to plug in my iPhone and use the iPod feature on my uconnect unit and I still had the same issues as bluetooth. My wife's car 16 Dodge Journey UConnect 8.4N has a "cheaper" UConnect head unit or isn't as fancy as the one in my 2016 Ram 2500 UConnect 8.4AN and I have no issues in her car so this whole problem confuses me however I am just like the rest of you and I too never had an issue before iOS 12.. PLEASE APPLE FIX THIS PROBLEM!!!!

I was hopeful too but alas nothing has changed and the same issues with the latest version. I’m now having to delete the phone off Uconnect every few days then reconnect it to make it work short term.

Does anyone one know if Apple are aware of the problem? I reported it but their best advice they can give is always to delete stuff off the phone (reset network settings; reset all setting or even delete the contents of entire phone and reload the software like it’s a new phone) when the issue is the IOS itself and its compatibility with Uconnect.

Its extremely annoying and im having to stop the car and go through the whole process to try and reconnect it again.

Just so I guys are aware, the latest (as of December 29) ios public beta seems to have sorted out the issues we were all having with Bluetooth.

As of right now, the initial track change takes about 15 seconds but then everything seems to work normally.

I didn't have to re-pair my phone or anything and re-pairing it after the fact did not change the operation.

This is on the current 8.4 (precarplay) head units at the latest firmware.

Thought you'd want to know.
