iOS 12 Bluetooth Uconnect issue

I updated my iPhone 7 to iOS 12, and immediately noticed that there is now a significant lag in song selection when connected to bluetooth in my car's Uconnect head unit. When a new song plays, the song run time is frozen for exactly 30 seconds while the song plays. If I try to toggle next/last track selection using the car's audio controls during this time, nothing happens until the 30 seconds pass, then it changes to the next song. It happens very consistently now with every new song that plays. Also, during some songs it'll do this freeze for 30 seconds where song navigation won't trigger.

Can't overstate how annoying this is. Has anyone else experienced this?

I am on the 12.1.3 (16D5037a) on my iPhone X. I decided to try enrolling in the beta program to see if it would help. I believe I just installed the 3rd public beta for 12.1.3. I am still having issues. It is some improvement though. So what happens is the music starts to play, but the elapsed time will freeze. This means I will not be able to advance songs until that starts working again. The music is not interrupted though. I can wait for the elapsed timer to start working again and then it will advance immediately. If the elapsed time is froze and I try and advance, it will not doing anything for about a minute or so. I have already verified that my uconnect software is up to date also. Is there anything I am not doing to improve my experience?

@BRMNTX, strangely this didn't work for me before but it worked flawlessly today. Interestingly as soon as I turn back to Media on the screen, the freezing occurs mid-song for 30 seconds. Going back to Phone or Climate allows for seamless track selection again. So, looks like it has to do specifically with how the tracks are displayed on the Media screen?

So the idea of staying off the media screen was working until this morning for me. I attempt to play all songs on shuffle and it was locking up after advancing for 30 seconds while on the navigation screen. I decided to give up. I went to https://www.infotainment.com/collections/all/products/2013-2018-ram-1500-2500-3500-8-4-4c-nav-uaq-retrofit-kit?variant=5161161359396. I purchased the model that includes apple car play. I am going to switch over to that and hope for better luck. I know it is an expensive purchase but it will be well worth it, in the long run. I was glad to see there was an option to retain the factory look and gain apple car play. I could of went aftermarket and it would of been cheaper, but it would stick out and look funny. I did talk with my dealership also about this. It sound like they are having a hard time with the updates that are pushed out by Uconnect.

Yeah I do like the clean solution. A person could go aftermarket and replace everything for $600. It even retains all factory features like climate control and backup camera. I just thought it would look stupid when it does not use the whole bezel space and sticks out about a half inch. A person also has to cut out a metal support also to get a aftermarket unit in. According to infotainment they took my VIN and I will be able to get updates from the uconnect site for the update HU. They do have their own dedicated support staff also that will help with updates. I am going to keep my original just in case. I will also probably tell the dealership to not attempt to update my HU firmware just in case they try to apply firmware for the old HU. I hope that using car play now will lead to less issues in the future as car play is more controlled by apple and used across different brands of HU's. Also using carplay solves the problem of having to pay map updates to Uconnect for their built in nav. You can just use apple maps for navigation. The only bad part is to use Apple CarPlay the phone has to be plugged into the usb port. There is no wireless options yet like in some of the aftermarket HUs.

Same issue with my iphone7 plus and my 2017 Dodge Ram Sport. Issue is related to iOS 12. I’m in Canada and we do not have all the Uconnect wireless features as the US has, so we didn’t get the updates here in Canada. I have to disable Bluetooth on my phone and reconnect to get the controls working again, but it reverts back to the lag/ not responding a few songs later. Fix this Apple!!!

Sorry it has taken so long to reply back. So I purchased an updated radio from:

https://www.infotainment.com/collections/all/products/2013-2018-ram-1500-2500-3500-8-4-4c-nav-uaq-retrofit-kit.

The first unit that I received was just stuck in a reboot loop after install. They sent me another unit and it worked. Everything is great but one thing, AppleCar Play audio quality. The sound is very flat and dull. I turned up the equalizer settings to compensate, but still does not as good as a Bluetooth connection. I have not experienced any issues advancing tracks or lock ups. I did call Apple and open a case on the Apple CarPlay audio quality. From the forums I read it is an apple issue not auto manufacturers. There are people reporting the same problem across quite a few brands. Otherwise the unit is a great upgrade from my original. The install is not too difficult as long as you can determine how to get the dash apart. I have the full console so it was a little more difficult.

Brief update for anyone following this thread... I upgraded to a 2019 Charger Scat Pack with the latest UConnect head unit and my iPhone8 now works perfectly. Fast, responsive, no weird issues. Most of my experience has been wired through Carplay but I briefly confirmed that Bluetooth works too. So to solve the problem just buy a new car. 👌🤑

@Majorachre, congrats on the new car. Yea, every time I've BT'ed to the 2019 FCA vehicles in our work fleet, they've worked flawlessly. Looks like the issue is isolated to the older head units. Still having issues, and am tired of always having to hardline my phone and skipping BT. The Climate/Phone screen workaround no longer works for me, same freeze-ups there now.

I have also had this issue with my 2017 Ram Sport and Iphone 7. I have tried everything mentioned previously including a factory phone reset and Uconnect update with a USB stick (Canada). For the time being I can skip through songs immediately if I display the phone screen, this is hardly ideal. Coincidentally, we also have a 2015 Trailhawk with the same Uconnect head unit and it works flawlessly. Phone is currently iOS 12.1.3.

OK, I'm not reading through 9 pages to see if anyone has noticed this, but:

IT'S LIMITED TO APPLE MUSIC!

This DOES NOT happen with Amazon Music. Not at all. Skipping is fine, artwork update is almost instantaneous, everything.

Siri still sounds like crap, but that's the UConnect software. After all these years you would think Chrysler would have come up with a solution for all their customers with Apple devices, but why am I surprised? Chrysler has never cared about customers once they bought a product before, so I didn't expect them to start now. Ongoing support is not in their playbook. With the introduction of Android Auto and Apple Carplay in 2019 models you can be assured you will never see a resolution to this.

Feb 22, 2019 7:42 AM in response to JoMo45

I’m sorry - I should have been clearer - by Apple Music I mean the main music app as opposed to the online streaming service (which runs through the music app anyway).

My experience is that using the default Apple Music app to play things is connected to this issue. Using Amazon Music, which can both stream, play locally downloaded, and play “radio” style stations, does not suffer from the same issues.

I’m investigating whether there is any chance there will be an upgrade to CarPlay for legacy units (hint: don’t hold your breath), or whether I have to buy an Infotainment unit (third party upgraded Uconnect device costing $1600) or a NavTool Carplay unit (third party add-on device that provides CarPlay support for about $500).

Feb 22, 2019 7:46 AM in response to bitbrat

Ah gotcha. Yea, it seems to be isolated to the Apple music app, specific to native files and how track selection works in relation to on-screen displays.

I can tell you that there is no way to put Carplay/AA onto older HU's (anything older than '17) because the hardware is different. Others on this (long) thread have replaced their older head unit entirely with a newer one, but like you said, it costs $$$. This issue has been ongoing since iOS12 was released, back last September - 6 months or so. Not great.
