Apple Podcast on IOS12 broken BMW carplay

Hi,

Updated to iOS12 and Apple Podcasts now exhibits odd behaviour on BMW head unit. All other carplay apps work fine including the new google maps (hurrah). Symptoms are basically that touch control occasionally works, control knob randomly jumps around items and never settles on any to select.

The touch and control knob are fine on any other app and the main menu in carplay.

I've reset the head unit and phone but makes no difference.

Any ideas?

Hello,

I, too, have a similar problem with the Podcast app after upgrading to iOS12. I have a Honda and Carplay seems to work well with Google maps but not with the Podcast app. The screen will stop responding to touch and the app regularly can't find its own content. This leads to me taking my eyes off the road to touch the screen (=safety hazard). The problem will disappear if I turn off the car and re-start but this is not an option on my commute. Before the iOS12 upgrade the app was stable.

Help please as I need my podcasts back.

Same issues for me after 12 and 12.1 - I even tried a brand new lightning cable and Reset All Setting and reinstalled apps from scratch. Apps are still broken / blank screen. 3 phones same issue. I am really disappointed with Apple on this - Carplay had become something I enjoyed using when I drove. I have spent days trying to figure this out with no luck.

I was having the same issue with the Podcast app and Apple Carplay on my head unit UNTIL I started using a new non-Apple lightening cable. The problem has NOT occurred since I started using the new cable. The specific cable I'm using is an AmazonBasics double braided nylon lightening to USB A cable. A new, different cable seems to have worked for me. Maybe it will work for others as well. Is the root cause electromagnetic interference using the apple cables? I don't know.

I've only just found this thread but I've had this issue on my Vauxhall Astra ever since updating to 12. I thought for a brief moment 12.1 had fixed it but after one use without issue it soon reverted back to the same problem.

Support in Twitter haven't found a solution yet.

I find myself navigating using my phone which essentially defeats the object of car play. Hoping for a fix but not expecting anything too soon.

Kind of relieved I'm not alone in this issue though.

Add me to the list, same deal. I primarily use the Podcasts app through Carplay (wired), so I can't speak to the usability of the other apps while in Carplay, but it worked flawlessly up until I finally upgraded to iOS 12; then the issues. Rebooting the phone before connecting gives a grace period where it works for a while, and then eventually it's all jacked up until another reboot.

I have noticed the same glitch ever since upgrading to iOS12 as well— Navigation in Podcasts when using CarPlay barely ever working. I had always turned cellular data off for Podcasts (only ever playing episodes I had pre-downloaded while on WiFi). This had always worked fine in CarPlay until iOS12. Now I can always fix the glitchiness if I turn cellular data on for Podcasts. This works very reliably. Unfortunately, I have noticed excessive data use while running the podcast app in CarPlay, even though I 1) still only ever play locally stored episodes and 2) I set the app to only download episodes while on WiFi and to not sync podcasts. I see no reason why data use is needed, but obviously the app freaks out when the data hose is cut off.

I have also noticed that the App behavior varies depending the data is toggled on or off for Podcast (works better when ON).

In addition, I have just checked and I have significant data consumption with Podcast while I only play locally stored episodes and I set the App to only download new episode via WiFi (as you did).

I tried your fix, and it's been a little bit better (don't seem to need to reboot the phone as often to make it work), but it's still jacked up and doing weird things. Additionally, now when I go to the Carplay settings on the phone, it just spins and never shows my car, so I can't rearrange the icons or delete and try to reconnect to my car. I may wipe the phone and try it all over again; it's so frustrating because when it was working it was so flawless, I loved it 😟
