Spotlight window disappears after typing a few characters

In the last few days, the Spotlight window started to disappear after I typed a few characters, depending on the character.

Problem with typing Spotlight search Recently, when attempting to type in a term for Spotlight search, after a couple characters the search bar disappears. When I reopen, the characters have disappeared. On trying to start over, the bar disappears again. This has rendered Spotlight which I use often unusable. This "seems" to be happening since updating to Sierra. HELP! (please!)
