What is the disappearing slider icon that appears under battery when openign lock screen

Since updating to IOS12 there has been a horizontal line that appears, briefly displays two bottons, then disappears. What is this for?

The indicate the new swipe down for control center from the lock screen. Once you’ve swiped to get the control center, they stop showing.
