iPhone XS Max Weak 5GHz WIFI Reception
I used to have full bars at my bed with iPhone X, now the Max only has 2. And it has trouble reconnect to the WIFI after airplane mode is turned on with WIFI turned on.
iPhone Xs Max, iOS 12, 64GB

I'm using Apple Extreme router, wifi download is 105 Mbps. I have both the 7S and the 10S. When both phones are within 5 feet of the router, the router sees both phones (PHY Mode) as 802.11a/n/ac. Moving 12 feet away (other side of the room from the router location) the router sees the 10s as 802.11a/n but the 7S is still seen as "ac". As soon as the "ac" is dropped the wifi speed is less than 1/2. Version 12.0.1 fixed the 10S. The 10S and the 7S can now move two rooms over though a "lath and plaster" wall and french doors and still be seen as a "ac" mode from the router and maintain 100 Mbps download.
Any one else made this observation by looking at how the router sees the phone?
Using Airport Utility, click on the router and then click on the wireless client name.
I sure hope they fix this because I am dropping calls and internet connection all over the place now. I have to literally find a spot on a street to conduct any business. PLEASE MAKE THIS A PRIORITY APPLE.
At $1200/phone, and it is a phone as well as a handheld, connection should be the focus.
I have the A2101 model and have bad 5Gz wifi outside the room where I have my router. My 7plus reach 100Mbit/s where the XS max at same spot barely reach 45Mbits.
So I got contacted by Apple via this forum, and we ran some test plus I got diagnostic profile so they got plenty of diagnostic info from both phones. They are investigating and I should get an answer back next week.
The issue is that after 12.0.1 my phone keeps on 5Ghz where sometime it would have faster connection on 2.4Ghz....
No issues on A1921 here. You may just drive yourself insane trying to determine where the phone was manufactured, what date it was made, what time of day, what the weather was like when it was made, what the astrology sign of the employees was, etc. There is no pattern other than the software. If 12.1 when it’s relesed doesn’t remedy your issues and you’re having real, not imaginary problems get rid of it.
In my case using the 2.4 band of my network would dramatically slow down my perception of the phone’s function. Because of this I made it forget that band and only use the 5 band. In my apartment it can pick up that band pretty much everywhere. That might not work for some. My guess is that the phone’s software was set to cause the new phones to more quickly drop a weaker signal and revert to the 2.4 band or the cell network. That doesn’t seem to be working so well for some. I was having a few cell network issues when I first got my Max on release day but there were 2 carrier updates over that weekend that seem to have fixed that on my device.
But again if the phone isnt functionally useable for you dump it. I’m very happy with mine so I’m keeping it. I find that it functions significantly faster than my 8 plus that it replaced. And don’t compare your iPads to the phones. My iPad Pro could pull a WiFi signal out of solid rock. It makes all phones look like toys in regards to WiFi reception.
It’s going to get dangerous. I drive a specific route regularly and have Verizon because it’s the only network that always had a very strong signal. Now I can’t get through on my new iPhone X’s. Last night I thought if I were to break down I had no way of an emergency contact. And my old iPad has full bars while I have 2 bars in my home. Apple needs to fix this ASAP.
I definitely agree. I’m in the same boat. I had 4 replaced but no success. As much as I want to own my XS as my daily phone, I just can’t trust it. One minute it’s super fast and signal is great, and another minute, entirely drops out of LTE and WiFi and sometimes both then reconnects. I’m holding strong for tomorrow or Tuesday for iOS 12.1 because there is a carrier setting update tied in with the software firmware. Only because I’ve heard that fixed the issues with LTE and WiFi. Yes, for me, 12.0.1 fixed my WiFi by far. Just holding up until this week when 12.1 rolls out. If not, back to my x for go

This would be great! Thanks. Any hints on where I can find mention of this?
Not sure if any of the below has been posted yet, but I’ve done a little digging into this....
My affected units are an Xs Max and Xs, both on Verizon. I am using an Apple AirPort Extreme, with the 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands separated into separate SSID’s.
Fortunately, I have no LTE issues on either phone. And both phones are rock solid on WiFi 2.4Ghz....just the data thoughput is low due to neighboring homes’ interference. However, when using the 5GHz band, both phones will kick off WiFi and go straight to LTE if I am not close to the router. These are in locations where my previous X and 8 were just fine on 5Ghz. I noticed the new phones do not go over to the 2.4GHz SSID, but go straight to LTE. Then I realized this is because I have WiFi assist turned on. When I turned it off, they still show connected to the 5Ghz band with 2 bars of signal, but little to no data is transferred unless I am close to the router. So, then I looked at the RSSI in the AirPort app, and the phones are showing -75 to -77 power levels when they kick off 5Ghz or don’t transfer data (with WiFi assist off). Although this is a weaker signal, I was able to verify other iOS devices can transfer data just fine at these levels. So, “hopefully” this is a firmware issue that can be resolved.
Hello to all,
I have the same problem with Wi-Fi and 4 LTE.
The signal is excellent, the problem is in the iPhone XS max itself, it cannot quickly receive and process data. I did an experiment; Next, he put the iPhone 7 and iPhone XS max and started downloading the GARAGE BAND program from the app store. IPhone 7 loaded quickly, iPhone XS max is still loading
For cleanliness, I will write that the Internet comes to my home through an optical fiber cable.

I do not know what to do....
I’ve been on the 12.1 betas for a couple weeks now and am not seeing any change. I’ve since changed the names of my 2.4GHz & 5GHz Wi-Fi bands at home and although I’m still finding my connection is weaker than it should be, because the SSID names are different, it’s not failing over from 5 to 2.4. I was really hoping for better, but nope.

Are you positive the XR ships with iOS 12.1? There’s still no release and the XR is being shipped. I want this update and I want it now! 🙄🙂
No, iPhone Xr isn't being shipped with ioS 12.1 and you'll have to wait for the update just like everyone else has to wait.
I’m using the current developer version on my iPhone X’s max and it looks much better for me for LTE, I have no LTE connection issues anymore but it seems that WI-FI has still issues with the low speed
After all these issues since launch, I’m always going back to my X which never had anything wrong. I’ve been seeing similar issues now that I’m back using it. LTE is weaker and videos buffer on high LTE areas and even with 70-90 mbps. Starting to believe it is software related and maybe it’s hitting the XS and XS Max harder than other devices. Today I used my x and seeing low strength which makes me think it’s definitely softw
It is odd that iOS 12.1 isn't out before the iPhone XR was released. Does anyone know what comes installed on the phone? I know they've only just been released today, but I'm sure some folks in Europe or Australia might have posted somewhere. It would probably be a bad idea to issue an update on the same day everyone's setting up their new iPhone XR.
I'm also just reading that the DST Apple Watch bug might not be fixed in time for folks in Europe. To me, that implies watchOS 5.1 won't be released today. Which could also imply no iOS 12.1 today, either. Which could mean a release for both next Monday or Tuesday... Which would fix the watchOS DST Bug for folks in the US.
I wouldn't read much into 12.1 not being out before Xr was released. It just means 12.1 isn't signed off yet and not ready for prime time. But they weren't going to hold up the release of the Xr and since 12.1 isn't out, it's very unlikely the Xr has anything other than 12.0.1 installed. It's possible 12.1 could be released soon, but with Apple Servers being overwhelmed with new phone activation's, it's still not likely being released today.
