iPhone XS Max Weak 5GHz WIFI Reception

I used to have full bars at my bed with iPhone X, now the Max only has 2. And it has trouble reconnect to the WIFI after airplane mode is turned on with WIFI turned on.

I have this issue as well and reported it to Apple on day one and they said that there is nothing wrong. They responded that it must be a router issue even though two iPhone SE's, one iPhone 6, one Mac Mini, one MacBook Air and one MacBook Pro have full 5GHz signals 20 feet from the router while my Xs won't connect at all. Even worse is that 10 feet from the router in the same room without any obstruction I have half strength on 5GHz.

I have installed all updates to 12.1 without any change. Apple, please fix this!!!

Same here.

But I installed iperf on my Synology with gigabit connection.

Results : both phones have same AVERAGE speed !!

It seems tools like Speedtest write down the fastest ever speed reached but average speed on long test with iperf both phones got pretty much same speed...

I will keep testing while I don’t have feedback from my diagnostic data sent to Apple...

I can see rspr0 change from -112 to -120 in field test mode when I place my pinky on/off the new band at the bottom of the phone. I know they can do what they can from a software perspective, but after all the troubleshooting I’ve done on my end for this it’s seeming more and more like a hardware issue.

For those of you that have both a 2.4GHz and 5GHz same Name SSID at home, you will benefit by renaming your 2.4GHz SSID name, and then hope that your signal isn’t too weak to fail over to LTE or 4G. For those of you not being able to use the phone at all on an LTE connection, you need to open a radar with Apple because this needs way more attention than it’s getting.

So for everyone stating that the XS phone has no issue and the bars don't represent a true measure of signal strength; look at the regulatory wireless submissions. The RF power output is lower than the 8 and X.

So sorry, science is science. I don't think Apple can fix this with software.

Great insight. Thank you. But why hasn’t this become a more public issue like antenae gate? This should be all over the press. $1200 phones not up to par.

Probably because there are now millions of iPhone Xs and Xs Max users out there having no issue with Wifi. They're not here on a thread about it, because they are just out using their phones without issue.

I think it’s a big deal. It’s irritating that mine and my wife’s xs max’s consistently have a pretty poor connection on 5ghz and falls over to 2.4ghz. It doesn’t matter how close or far from the router we are. I don’t even let my devices connect to the 2.4ghz anymore, which causes some issues in a home with some smart devices like the roomba that has to be on 2.4ghz. It’s extremely terrible that this hasn’t been talked about more. Any search for this takes you back to when the device first came out and not much since.

Me and the wife both have the A1921 model. LTE is good for the most part, but the phone still would prefer the 2.4gh to the 5ghz 99.9% of the time. All other phones/iPads/ other devices that are 5GHZ at all distances in range run the 5GHZ extremely well, except these 2 phones in my home.
