Back up Failed with My Passport

I get the error message that Mac can't repair the disk My Passport. It said that I could open files on the disk but not save messages to it---to back up the disk and re-format it as soon as I can---but I have no idea how and fear that if I do anything I will lose everything! I ran first aid but it said it could not repair it. No idea why this suddenly happened---can it be fixed or should I just go buy another one? Thanks. Using a Mac Book Pro laptop.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5), how do I fix????

Those WD externals are not housed in high quality enclosures. It’s possible that the drive is OK but that the enclosure, or the cable connecting it to your computer, is not functioning properly. Trying another cable would be an inexpensive option. Carefully prying open the enclosure, removing the drive, and putting the drive into a different enclosure or drive dock is another option. OWC sells good enclosures and docks. You can also find drive docks and enclosures on Amazon, from Sabrent, Plugable, etc.

One backup drive is not a sufficient safety net.

If you reformat it, you will lose everything on it. You can get a replacement drive and try to transfer your files from the Passport to the new drive.

Are there any files stored on the Passport that are not on your computer?
