itunes stream from macbook to apple tv

If I try to play my itunes on my macbook and stream to my appletv which is playing into my audio amplifier the stream seems to time out after a few minutes (10 to 30) and has to be restarted. Both devices are wireless through my airport extreme and when I check everyone is on the same network. This error makes appletv useless for music. It works better if I play from cloud to appletv but I don't want the tv screen on. Does anyone have a solution?

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2012), OS X Yosemite (10.10)

Apple TV is meant to be a media streamer for the TV, it’s always been hit or miss with trying to play audio without having the display active.
