I am the owner of a Shared album with nearly 5000 photos. A month ago the shared album stopped working. It looks like the first step is to turn off photo sharing in settings but before I do that I want to confirm that everyone will not lose all photos

Sounds like you may have hit the limit for any one shared album. If so, there is nothing to fix.
