How to add a blank space ?

What is a bit annoying for me is the fact that (unlike Premiere etc.) the clips in FC project permanently glue to each other. Often I would like to keep a free (black) space between them, to place them freely where I want. How to disable this feature and to be able to keep the clips where I want ?
