Format error Wester Digital my book

Last year I bought WD Mybook 1 tb and backed up some photos and files from my MacBook Air without any trouble. For 2 days I’ve been trying to back up the remaining files and photos from the same MacBook before Resetting it to factory specs. I keep getting the error msg that not formatted or on occasion it progresses to the question what do you want to do and it will not allow me to click back up...only install driver option. When I click that, it sits for hours on estimated time remaining and makes no progress. I’ve tried multiple things from downloading the driver from WD website which did the exact same thing to erasing the my book files and reformatting it to Mac. Still no luck! Any suggestions to get everything backed up to the my book?
