Buzzing Earpiece iPhone Xs

When my iPhone Xs is at max volume during phone calls I often hear a high pitched “buzzing” or “crackling” sound coming from the earpiece when the person on the other end of the call is talking.

Has anyone else been experiencing this problem?

I am using the developer betas and sending them feedback constantly about the issue.

The most annoying part is that even the default ringtones like “Opening” will crackle a bit at maximum volume from the earpiece.

To replicate the issue even better, go on YouTube and listen some piano music at maximum volume, it will crackle horribly.

Yes, the issue was present on iPhone 8 Plus also and was fixed with a software update and the same could be done on our XS’s if Apple will realize this is a widespread issue.

They just need to tone down a certain frequency and it won’t affect the maximum volume at all.

If enough people will provide feedback to Apple, i’m certain this will be sorted quickly.

Reading this whole thread again it still “sounds like” (sorry for the pun) the speaker is being driven too hard into distortion because some audio input files are encoded at too high level. You can often hear similar effects if you put a low powered speaker (e.g. 10 Watt) on an amplifier with higher output (20+ Watts) and crank the amp up to maximum. If you do it too often you may even break the speaker cone so it distorts even at lower levels - that’s abuse and User Error.

The simple fix is to reduce the volume setting for high modulation inputs, which can be either a user action on the button, or Apple can impose universally reduced gain and lower maximum volume in software. Personally I prefer the User method, because if it is forced in software we lose the ability to increase volume for inputs which have lower modulation levels. That could leave you struggling to hear a phone call with quiet speech.

I have the exact same A2101 model 256GB and all of them i tested were the same model.

Try this, put maximum volume and go through some default ringtones like “Opening” (which for me i can hear it crackle 3-4 times during the ringtone) or any other music that has piano notes, even try piano music on YouTube at maximum volume and listen to the earpiece.

It will crackle horribly.

Ok it seems it was the case with iPhone 8 too

Exact problem. We need to go to support and get as much as info as we can. The problem is there from some time ago and apple is doing nothing. Which is a shame. If anyone had an update about this issue let us know

I have iPhone XS (Verizon). The same thing. Crackling sound while on the phone call or watching video. Happens very rarely, but happens. Apple support offered replacement over the phone. Do they ship replacement phone in the same retail box or it is like blank white box?

p.s. I’m using the latest iOS , wiped phone, and did everything what apple support team said.

Just an update. Last posted on 12/19/18 to say I was having the same issue with my XS Max. I've been watching this thread since. Made my way through support layers and was offered a new phone. Seeing that hasn't helped anyone else here I opted to keep this one and asked them to keep my case open. The crackling/distortion seems to happen when the caller on the other end has a lot of background noise or is speaking loudly. Fortunately, it only happens every couple of weeks or so for me but is still annoying and completely stalls the conversation. Apple needs to acknowledge the issue and make it right, especially at the price point we're paying for these devices.

I am having the same issue with Xs Max since day 1. I put my hopes into iOS 12.2 to resolve the crackling noises, but no improvement.

This issues seems bigger as we do have it in Germany, too. People changing from Vodafone to T-Mobile and back still keep the disturbing noises during phone calls. Switching VoLTE off does not help either.

Here is the cross-link to the German users:

Maybe if we stand together, Apple will acknowledge the issues and put efforts into a solution?

@psaikin:

It‘s not a matter of volume! The disturbing noises sound like dull plops only during phone calls via a carrier (not Facetime, not WiFi call). It is not about distortion, it is about interference in form of those dull cracks/bangs.

And it does not matter if you use a headset or not. This proves that it is not about the speaker itself.

Hey there, a week ago I bought iPhone XS. I was so excited. I’m a music producer so I’m so sensitive at sound problems. After a day with the new iPhone I realized the problem, I went to an authorized serviced and we checked some other IPhone XS. Every of them had the same issue some of them had that problem in a less level. I’m really disappointed. I gave almost 1500 to have such a basic problem. Guys I think you need to forget it even if you replace it you will have it again. It’s a mass problem. What do you think? I’m looking forward for your replies.
