I have an old macbook pro (mid 2009) and the latest OS installed on it will not support transfering music from itunes to new iphone Xs...is my only option to buy a new mac?!

iTunes can be updated to the latest and current version 12.8, which requires Intel CPU, and OS X version 10.10.5 or later.
iTunes 12.8 may request another internal update if you connect (tether) an iOS 12 device. This update is required to connect to the iOS device.
