Red Eye reduction not functioning as expected

Whe I use the Red Eye reduction in Photos on my Mac, both Auto and Manual, the red eye reduction tool appear appropriately, they select the red eye appropriately, and they seem to apply the function, but the pupils are still red. There is no change whatsoever to the picture. Changes using other tool in Photos edit do successfully change the photo. Just not the Red Eye reduction.

If the red eye does not go away, you may need to resize the circle by dragging the slider. The circle of the red eye cursor needs to be positioned exactly in the middle of the red area and fit snugly around the red area. Remove red-eye from photos using Photos on Mac - Apple Support

  1. Double-click a photo, then click Edit in the toolbar.
  2. Click Adjust in the toolbar.
  3. In the Adjust pane, click the disclosure triangle next to Red-eye.
  4. Click Auto.Photos removes any red-eye that it detects in faces in the photo.
  5. If red-eye still appears, drag the Size slider until the circle is the same size as the red area in the person’s eyes.
  6. Position the pointer over the red pupil and click. Repeat this step for all other red eyes in the photo.
