Hello!!
I was reading these comments, i bought mu xs max 256 gb. And surprise top speaker stopped working after 3 days..
Restart solves it. So it should be a software issue..
Back your phone up. Log into iTunes from your Mac or PC and do a Restore using iTunes. Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes. Log out of iCloud on your phone then do the restore. Mine has been working for 3 days straight.

Ya I’m having the same problems the ear speaker works fine on calls but when on YouTube or intagran or anything the ear speaker does not work only the bottom one does. I hope this is not a hardware issue as I just spent $1249 on the iPhone XS Max.
I am using an Iphone XS Max 256 GB and I too have this problem. I first noticed it when I was playing PUBG Mobile and I wasn't hearing sterio audio. I'm IOS 12 (not the beta) and a restart is a good solution. I hope it is just a software bug that can be resolved.
I am having the same issue. My first Xs Max arrived on September 27th. By the 29th, the speaker in the earpiece had failed. I took the phone back to the Apple store on 10/01. They ran a hardware test. The Mic failed, the receiver failed and the speaker in the earpiece failed. They tried to reload the software and that failed. They gave me a new Xs Max. Today, a day later, the speaker has failed on the new device. Apple support had me do a restore via iTunes. After 3 attempts, the restore finished. The speaker works but I fully expect it to fail by tomorrow. I will more than likely return the phone and continue using my iPhone X for a few months until these issues are fully resolved.
I have returned 2 Xs Max phones already. The 3rd one is having the same issue. I can’t keep returning phones. Apple should fix this or at least acknowledge that it’s there and let us know when it will be fixed. I paid $1250 for a device and I expect it to work properly. All facets.
My replacement phone had scratches on the screen so I returned it. When I got the 3rd device, I experienced the same speaker issue. But the 2nd device was working after the restore from iTunes. I have had folks tell me the iTunes restore worked for them for a few days but then the issue returned.
I noticed this issue a couple weeks after having the XS Max. I never play music using the onboard speakers but I'm always using speakerphone for phone calls. The earpiece doesn't work on speakerphone during a phone call but the earpiece works fine if it's not on speakerphone. Rebooting the device fixes temporarily but will sometimes happen twice a day. Hard reset and restore completed but did not fix. Can someone verify that the same thing happens on phone calls when on speakerphone? I can't find an example of that anywhere online.

This issue is usually resolved, at least temporarily, by rebooting the phone.
Apple does know there is a bug surrounding this, but it would be speculation to guess at an ETA for a fix.
I've done the full restore and set up as a new iPhone but the issue reoccured. It's also reoccured after updating to today's release of iOS 12.1. It's a real shame the bug fix wasn't in there (I can confirm because my top speaker isn't working literally as I type this) I did however chat with an apple support guy through the apple support app and he said the engineering team was hard at work on this issue.
Same problem. And it is a software issue cause rebooting solves it. Play any music or just speaker on phone call. Cover bottom speaker and you will hear nothing. Reboot. Same thing and now you get sound from top speaker. Wife’s phone does not have the issue yet but I use my phone more. Need to figure out what is triggering it until apple fixes it.
Definitively not after device replacement, and definitively not while i could see this on another Xs and XsMax devices as well.
When i read this thread, it's the exact same sporadic issue.
The support confimred, that this has to be a software issue for sure. And this is the same what i suppose with my experience.
I'm sure they're aware. But every person who has this issue needs to provide feedback to Apple via this link. The more who do, the more aware Apple will be: Feedback - iPhone - Apple
Happening with mine too, i already updated to 12.1 but still it stops working for some time now, need to do hard reset to fix it, still comes back after a day or two.😔
Just got a new iphone XS,. Same thing happened. A reboot fixes! But why should I have to keep doing this
Let apple know!!!
I talked to AppleCare two weeks ago and they said it was a known problem and would be fixed in the next update. Fingers crossed. It’s annoying.
