iPhone XS Max lightning port charging issue

Perhaps iOS 12.1 may fix issue(s) and here’s why. (Disclaimer: I haven’t read through all replies.)

My experience has been the following on my iPhone XS Max (512gb), iOS 12.1 beta)

- experienced similar charging issues as described

- enrolled in iOS beta program and upgraded to iOS 12.1 beta

- After 6 of 6 times charging phone in a ‘Sleep’ state

I haven’t experienced charging issues .

I can’t say definitively that iOS 12.1 beta completely fixed all charging issues affecting iPhone XS or XS Max - only sharing my observations.

According to "Using USB accessories with iOS 11.4.1 and later - Apple Support":

You might need to unlock your passcode-protected iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to connect it to a Mac, PC, or a USB accessory

This charging issue is probably the result of a security feature introduced in an attempt to stop iPhone unlockers such as GrayKey. More info: Apple Vs. GrayKey: Leaked Emails Expose The Fight For Your iPhone Privacy.

I do not know why this only affects certain phones, but this seems to be a very likely cause of the issue.

I've tried turning on USB Accessories and then force restart my iPhone xs max. After doing that I'm not facing any issue for the past 17hours... Definitely am sure that this is a software related issue...

I have got iPhone Xs Max which has same issue that people talking about it. It doesn’t charge or wake up when I plug in the charger it came with. However there is no issue seen when I use my old iPhone 6s Plus charger. Regardless how long the iPhone has been sleep, it does charge immediately when I plug it in with old charger.

I believe issue is from cable or the charger itself while everyone saying it’s the iPhone which has hardware or software issue. This is just my experience and opinion which I hope help people.

Appears to be fixed with iOS 12.1 Beta on a iPhone XS Max 512GB.

Just tested that config and it works fine.

Settings

“faceID and passcoe” - “ USB accesory” should be turned on, may be defaulted off.

According to this article, and just checked with mine, I think the default setting for this section is disabled, which mean pretty much you cant use lightning port at all unless you unlock the phone. Came to this thread via Lew's video and he also mentioned that he didn't realise hence he only used a wireless charger which doesn't affect with this feature as they don't need to be connected to the lightning port.

If this was the case, perfect just put "Allow Access When Locked Section" section enable it so you can use lightning port even though after 1 hour without usage.

This is a known problem with the iPhone XS series, it is a software problem that will be fixed in a later version of iOS. To fix the issue for now : Go into Settings, FaceID and Passcode, scroll down to "Allow access when locked" and turn on USB Accessories.

Sounds to me like you might have the Lightning Port disabled.

In the settings of iOS12 there’s an option to disable the lightning port when the iPhone is locked. This is a security/privacy feature as most law enforcement agencies that gain access to iPhones without the owner’s consent do so by connecting devices to the lightning port.

I suggest you make sure that option is not active and see if the issue persists.

Under Face ID & Password, by default It has USB accessories ticked off not allowing it while its locked. Just like awhile back when Apple had Wifi Assist on by default and it drove up everyone's data. See if this fixes the issue

I have tested my device over and over and I do not have a problem since I changed the usb Accessories setting and restarted device . I have an iPhone XS Max SIM free bought directly from an Apple brick and mortar store.

Having the same issue but managed to find the solution for my phone

1. go to "settings" then "face id and password" (i don't use English on my phone so mind the translation)

2. scroll all the way down and allow "USB accessories" when phone is locked

Hey Erald i get a full charge even though Im having the same problem. I have read some users stating that its just a security feature to unlock the phone wait for a bit and after to plug it into the wall charger. When i do this i get a full charge even when i do it over night and wake up in the morning hope this helps. Are you saying your phone stops charging after random amount of time even though the charge icon appears when you first plug the cable in ??
