iPhone XS Max lightning port charging issue

I think I figured it out!! I switched from the small white block charger that came with the phone and tried the iPad charger and it started working right away. We don't usually use those small ones in our house anyway so I am hoping this is a fix!

The problem started up again about 2 hours after I erased all data from the phone. No matter what charger I use (usb cord in my jeep, 61w charger for MacBook Pro USBC to Lightning, or supplied charger in box) I am still having intermittent disturbances while trying to connect to a power source.

Unfortunately, no matter what charger or cable I use, the problem is still there. i have an Apple fast charge adapter and one that’s aftermarket. Has anyone observed this issue in the smaller iphone XS?

Same basic issue, but with a twist. New XS Max 256 GB AT&T running 12.0 (16A366). If I plug it into to my Belkin iPhone + Watch Charging Dock, it begins charging for a few seconds, stops charging, and repeats, over and over. Makes no difference whether I have the phone unlocked or locked when I plug it in. (Oh, and I’ve disabled the USB Restrictor, although that made no difference either.) Same thing happens when I plug it into the USB port of my 2018 Audi A5 Sportback for CarPlay. Starts working normally for somewhere between thirty seconds to two minutes, then loses its connection, then comes back on without my taking any action. I’ve tried different cables, done many hard resets, wiped the phone and started over, got rid of the 12.1 beta 1. No effect. One difference: it seems to have no trouble connecting via an Apple cable to a 29W Apple charger. Reluctant to take it back if it’s software. Anyone else seeing the same behavior with both a charger and CarPlay?

I’m pretty sure this is software. Also if it was hardware it shouldnt just happen in sleep mode/ inactive mode. I expect swapping the phone will just give you another phone with the same issue confirming it’s not hardware or if it is they have a mass problem. As you said you checked it on 3 devices all showing the same issue... if this is the case in the uk under the trades description act this product is unfit for purpose as such will cause mass recalls. I recoken in the next couple of day this issue will become bigger across the forums though it will help if we. Keep watching the forum for any new people reporting It and directing them hear to see if it’s the same issue.

I swapped my phone. I had wanted a bigger capacity anyways so it was two birds with one stone. I would recommend people holding onto their device. I switched to different capacity XS Max and still same thing. Curious to know if the smaller XS shows this.

It is happening to my iPhone Xs as well. I think if it was hardware related, you would be able to make it stop charging my moving the lightning cable ever so slightly in the port. I Have tried that and it still continues to charge. It definitely sounds like a software issue as the Google Pixel 2 had a similar issue. Users weren’t able to use quick charge. Google sent out an update fairly fast, and that issue was resolved. My IPhone 8 Plus, which I traded in, did the same thing as my now iPhone Xs did after updating to iOS 12. It would also say it was still charging for a few seconds after I took it off the charger. If it is hardware related, it sounds like a pretty big recall that Apple is going to have to do! No new phone will ever be perfect, all of them have quirks we have to live with to some extent!

Just I’m wondering how could this issue escalates enough to catch Apple’s eyeballs and respond to the matter officially?

Only us a bunch of people here trying to figure it out seems only licking each other’s wounds after all.

Best way is to get this forum discussion flagged up by a mod or get a YouTube review of phones to show the issue therefore causing people to test there phones in a mass amount, as such bring it to apples attention.

I’ve noticed how we don’t seem to have any official response as of yet. Also to note if the phone is turned off and you plug the charger in it works first time.

With no issues so it just seems when it’s like in a sleep/ inactive mode it’s effected while the phone is turned on. I have yet to let the phone run out of battery and test it.

I've noticed this issue as well. First I thought it was a faulty cable and used the one from my iPad. But the same thing happened with that as well. It seems like a software issue it works every time the screen is on.

Another thing I've noticed is I don't even need to wait 20 seconds after screen turning off to reproduce this issue. It's pretty much instantaneous. I unplug my phone from the charger, turn off the screen, and after a couple of seconds I reconnect the charging cable. It won't charge.

EDIT: I could reproduce the issue EVEN WITH SCREEN ON. The factor is inactivity for at least 3 to 10 seconds - screen on or off. What I mean is- don't move the phone, don't touch the screen, do not give any inputs or do anything on the phone for a few seconds. Plug in the lightning cable. It won't work. Now touch the screen and replug the cable, it starts charging. Verified this many many times.

Very disappointed with this issue. Can't believe an almost $1400 device has such issues with basic functionality.

A user named kanshu on the MacRumors forums suggested turning on the USB Accessories (Allow access when locked) toggle under Face ID & Passcode in Settings. I enabled it and so far, it seems to be working but I'm not too certain.

Yeah I'm on that thread too. It seemed to work for me initially.

I tried it out at work with USB C to lightning cable, failed again.

At this point its pretty hit or miss no matter what we do.

Its a problem because I left my phone on the charger one night, and it had not charged all night.

I'd to go to work with 15%. I'll test this more at home this evening.

If there's no fix, I'll considering returning it.

Same issue here... It doesn't matter if the phone has been in my pocket, sitting on a desk, or being in use.. It will not recognize the lightening cable the first time it is inserted. Sometimes unplugging it and plugging it back in works, sometimes it doesn't.. Sometimes I need to unplug it and flip the plug over and then plug it back in.. I heard 5.0.1 for the Apple Watch fixed a charging issue with that device so hopefully an update is coming out for the XS and SX Max. After the bugs/issues with iOS 11, I thought we saw the end of issues like this one. How is battery life for you? Mine seems to be lacking.. I remember when the X came out last year, I could charge it and leave it unplugged all night and not loose any battery life.. On the XS Max, I unplug it before bed and I loose 2% to 5% in seven hours..
