iPhone XS Max lightning port charging issue

So Just got my new iphone. and noticed this issue I've been having. I connect the lightning cable to my phone to charge and most of the time it’s automatically charges. However I’ve noticed several times plugging the phone in and no charge comes up. Tried unplugging and plugging back in, sometimes it’ll work. I started to test it out. And I noticed the times I plugged it in, and I get no charge, I‘d leave the phone alone for 10-15 seconds. I pick it up, the screen illuminarea and then the charging symbol pops up. ive Tested these only with apple cables. So I’m thinking it’s either a port issue or possibly software. Any ideas or recommendations ?

thanks.

I am having this issue as well. I cannot tell if it is related to software, haven’t really paid attention to that part. I have an official 29w apple adapter with official Apple USB C power cable, as well as an aftermarket charger. Even today getting off work, i tried to connect it to my car charger and same issue. I set up an appointment with my carrier tomorrow and will be switching the phone.

I’m pretty sure this is software. Also if it was hardware it shouldnt just happen in sleep mode/ inactive mode. I expect swapping the phone will just give you another phone with the same issue confirming it’s not hardware or if it is they have a mass problem. As you said you checked it on 3 devices all showing the same issue... if this is the case in the uk under the trades description act this product is unfit for purpose as such will cause mass recalls. I recoken in the next couple of day this issue will become bigger across the forums though it will help if we. Keep watching the forum for any new people reporting It and directing them hear to see if it’s the same issue.

It is happening to my iPhone Xs as well. I think if it was hardware related, you would be able to make it stop charging my moving the lightning cable ever so slightly in the port. I Have tried that and it still continues to charge. It definitely sounds like a software issue as the Google Pixel 2 had a similar issue. Users weren’t able to use quick charge. Google sent out an update fairly fast, and that issue was resolved. My IPhone 8 Plus, which I traded in, did the same thing as my now iPhone Xs did after updating to iOS 12. It would also say it was still charging for a few seconds after I took it off the charger. If it is hardware related, it sounds like a pretty big recall that Apple is going to have to do! No new phone will ever be perfect, all of them have quirks we have to live with to some extent!

Best way is to get this forum discussion flagged up by a mod or get a YouTube review of phones to show the issue therefore causing people to test there phones in a mass amount, as such bring it to apples attention.

I’ve noticed how we don’t seem to have any official response as of yet. Also to note if the phone is turned off and you plug the charger in it works first time.

With no issues so it just seems when it’s like in a sleep/ inactive mode it’s effected while the phone is turned on. I have yet to let the phone run out of battery and test it.

I've noticed this issue as well. First I thought it was a faulty cable and used the one from my iPad. But the same thing happened with that as well. It seems like a software issue it works every time the screen is on.

Another thing I've noticed is I don't even need to wait 20 seconds after screen turning off to reproduce this issue. It's pretty much instantaneous. I unplug my phone from the charger, turn off the screen, and after a couple of seconds I reconnect the charging cable. It won't charge.

EDIT: I could reproduce the issue EVEN WITH SCREEN ON. The factor is inactivity for at least 3 to 10 seconds - screen on or off. What I mean is- don't move the phone, don't touch the screen, do not give any inputs or do anything on the phone for a few seconds. Plug in the lightning cable. It won't work. Now touch the screen and replug the cable, it starts charging. Verified this many many times.

Very disappointed with this issue. Can't believe an almost $1400 device has such issues with basic functionality.

Yeah I'm on that thread too. It seemed to work for me initially.

I tried it out at work with USB C to lightning cable, failed again.

At this point its pretty hit or miss no matter what we do.

*****.

Its a problem because I left my phone on the charger one night, and it had not charged all night.

I'd to go to work with 15%. I'll test this more at home this evening.

If there's no fix, I'll considering returning it.

Same issue here... It doesn't matter if the phone has been in my pocket, sitting on a desk, or being in use.. It will not recognize the lightening cable the first time it is inserted. Sometimes unplugging it and plugging it back in works, sometimes it doesn't.. Sometimes I need to unplug it and flip the plug over and then plug it back in.. I heard 5.0.1 for the Apple Watch fixed a charging issue with that device so hopefully an update is coming out for the XS and SX Max. After the bugs/issues with iOS 11, I thought we saw the end of issues like this one. How is battery life for you? Mine seems to be lacking.. I remember when the X came out last year, I could charge it and leave it unplugged all night and not loose any battery life.. On the XS Max, I unplug it before bed and I loose 2% to 5% in seven hours..

Having the same issue. Just finished an online chat with Apple. The rep did not know this was a known issue. I sent her this thread's link but they are unable to access while on their work Macs. Similar to others, her recommendation was to exchange my phone. I told her no and referred to everyone on this thread who had already done that without success. She then transferred me to a "Senior Advisor". First, he recommended an exchange, then a Factory Reset. I said no to both. I asked how would this get escalated to Apple and he set me up with a call back tomorrow with another Senior Advisor plans to gather additional info and -- supposedly -- "send to [their] engineering department".

Alright guys, like some of you even I've tried every possible thing at this point.

iTunes Restored, tried different chargers, different cables, that USB setting thing, thats everything.

Absolutely nothing seemed to get me the consistent charging detection.

My iPad lights up in milliseconds every time I connect to a charger. Phone gives no response.

My colleagues iPhone XS doesn't seem to have this issue. So maybe only the Max does?

Gonna go in to the store tomorrow and try my luck with an exchange.

I'm not hopeful of that though.

I'll keep ya'll posted.

I've tried using the cable and charger that came with my XS Max, a lightening cable attached to my MacBook Pro, the cable and charger from my one year old X device (that did not have this issue), a 29w Apple charger with USB-C to lightening cable, one of the many extra cables I have accumulated over the years, and a different outlet thinking it was an issue at my house. It's the same thing, the device does not recognize its being charged the first time its plugged into a charger/computer. I've restarted the device, restored the device (from my MacBook Pro) after I had AT&T unlock my device (the 2nd day), I have the USB extra security setting enabled already. Outside of having my device replaced or calling Apple, I'm pretty sure I have everything covered.

The Apple Watch had a charging issue, reviewed the release notes for 5.0.1 and the charging issue is listed as a fix. Hopefully it's a software issue. With the XS Max being as popular as it is, it would be terrible to have a hardware defect on a percentage of this device lineup..

When I spoke with a supervisor yesterday at Applecare they stated to me that Apple is not going to do anything about yet because they don’t have enough complaints yet. We need someone with a bigger platform such as a YouTube channel to get this issue out there, so more people can become more aware and complain to force apple to address this issue
