iPhone XS Max lightning port charging issue

Yeah I’m pretty sure its a software issue too. Let’s just hope some sort of update patch comes out soon to address the issue. Also I feel like if it was some sort of hardware issue with the physical port or an internal chip then it would also happen when the screen was on don’t you think, and it doesn’t happen when the screen is on only when it’s asleep

After a frustrating Apple Care support call, I was finally told to plug the iPhone into iTunes and hit the "Check for Update" button.. Didn't even have to hit the button and a new, never-before seen dialog box popped up saying it was applying an update. It wasn't a normal update window, not sure if it was a carrier update or a background software/firmware update (it did not specify). I was required to close iTunes and then the update was applied to my iPhone XS Max. I tested it out an there still seems to be a delay to initiate the charge.. I'll test it tomorrow after I have to charge it again. It's a bit unsettling to not know if its a hardware, battery, or software issue...

Yeah I tried tinkering with that setting as well and no dice. My original was the silver 64gb XS Max. I traded for a gold 256gb max. I am currently on 12.1 beta and the issue seems harder to replicate now. Has anyone else tried updating to the iOS 12.1 beta?

I normally always participate in the betas. For a while I even had developer betas installed on my 8 Plus. (huge risk). The only reason i hadn’t installed on my XS Max yet is I wanted to be aware of any non-beta related issues.

With that said I have never really had any problems with any betas aside from an app not working here and there. It’s early for me to say this charging issue is fixed, but i will keep testing.

Just want to add one thing, for my phone black 256g max, sometimes even the screen is on and I plugged in my cable it won’t recognize as well. Any one has the same issue? I discover this happens more frequently when I use my power bank instead of Apple cable to charge.

Hi vedanthk this is my issue too , I’ve sent videos to apple for them to pass on to there technical team , hoping to hear a response ASAP though I’ve been told it could be a week. Though I’m still unsure if this is caused by hardware. Could be defective batches. Or most people with a iPhone use wireless charging if you try it first time on a wireless pad it works without a issue. As such will never notice this issue unless they have to plug it in which could be months.

I have the same exact issue at first I did think anything of it, but now the issue has become more and more noticeable. Where I would plug my iPhone XS Max 64 GB in for a charge and the phone would not recognize that it is charging until I unplug the cord and reinsert the cord. Apple needs to fix this issue as soon as possible because we did not spend top dollar on a non functional device.

Don't know why but my iPhone 5s is also behaving weirdly when it comes to charging. It won't connect at first attempt. I've to flip the cable and try reinserting it, then only it gets connected. Hope so it is a software bug. 😟

This discussion was featured in a new video from UnboxTherapy. He tests multiple XS and XS Max models and the issue reproduces to some extent on almost all of them. I am running 12.1 public beta since last night and haven’t been able to reproduce the problem on my XS Max 256. I will keep testing but I think Apple knows about this and the least they should do is notify users because this could put people in a real bind who depend on a charged device.

I have tried that setting on 12.0, and it does not help. It doesn’t even take an hour for the charging to be unresponsive. it’s literally 5 minutes or less and the device will not charge. Haven’t been able to replicate the issue on 12.1 public beta.

According to this article, and just checked with mine, I think the default setting for this section is disabled, which mean pretty much you cant use lightning port at all unless you unlock the phone. Came to this thread via Lew's video and he also mentioned that he didn't realise hence he only used a wireless charger which doesn't affect with this feature as they don't need to be connected to the lightning port.

If this was the case, perfect just put "Allow Access When Locked Section" section enable it so you can use lightning port even though after 1 hour without usage.

I just got my wife a XS Max, and after I watched the "Unboxing Therapy" video I tried to reciprocate the issue. Unfortunately, I was successful. I observed both issues on the same phone. I plugged it in while the screen was off and the phone did not started charging. I tapped on it and then it was charging. During a second attempt, I did the same thing, but now the phone did not started charging not even when I tapped it and after I raised the phone. For the second issue (not charging at all), I had to unplug the cable and reversed it and then the phone recognized that the charger was inserted.

I spent $1300 on this phone and it is not working properly? Shame on Apple. Everytime they provide you less for your money.

This is a known problem with the iPhone XS series, it is a software problem that will be fixed in a later version of iOS. To fix the issue for now : Go into Settings, FaceID and Passcode, scroll down to "Allow access when locked" and turn on USB Accessories.

I tried with my iPhone XS and it happens definitely when I put the lightning cable in a certain side, but not on the other side.

Like basically, on one side, when I plug the lightning cable in, it charges like it would normally do.

However, when I try the other side of the lightning cable, it does nothing until I wake up my iPhone XS, and then it charges.

Apple, could you answer to our questions and patch this issue? I wouldn't expect such critical bugs for a more than a tousand euros phone.

EDIT: Sometimes, when I wake up the phone, the charge isn't even launching, I have to unplug and to re-plug to make it charge.
