iPhone XS Max lightning port charging issue

So Just got my new iphone. and noticed this issue I've been having. I connect the lightning cable to my phone to charge and most of the time it’s automatically charges. However I’ve noticed several times plugging the phone in and no charge comes up. Tried unplugging and plugging back in, sometimes it’ll work. I started to test it out. And I noticed the times I plugged it in, and I get no charge, I‘d leave the phone alone for 10-15 seconds. I pick it up, the screen illuminarea and then the charging symbol pops up. ive Tested these only with apple cables. So I’m thinking it’s either a port issue or possibly software. Any ideas or recommendations ?

thanks.

When I contacted Apple-support, they said it was not an iOS issue but a sw issue that occurred when I set up an iPhone from an existing iPhone or a backup. Therefore there is no need for a bug fix of the iOS. Also they said it was not isolated to the new iPhone XS Max phones. The charging issue should therefore be fixed when I did a factory reset.

It could still be hardware but not in the sense of the port. There has to be a chip or controller in the phone because it tells you when you plug in a non supported accessory. I agree I’m leaning towards software but a faulty power controller or chip could also be the issue, although unlikely. The connection is fine because I’ve wiggled my wire once connected and the charge is unaffected.

Hello everyone,

I tried with my iPhone XS and it happens definitely when I put the lightning cable in a certain side, but not on the other side.

Like basically, on one side, when I plug the lightning cable in, it charges like it would normally do.

However, when I try the other side of the lightning cable, it does nothing until I wake up my iPhone XS, and then it charges.

Apple, could you answer to our questions and patch this issue? I wouldn't expect such critical bugs for a more than a tousand euros phone.

Regards.

EDIT: Sometimes, when I wake up the phone, the charge isn't even launching, I have to unplug and to re-plug to make it charge.

Exactly, my original message:

Isn't there a new feature which blocks the USB port entirely (Normally except charging) after the device has been idling for about an hour or hasn't been unlocked for 2 weeks?

This is a new feature which should lock out police and hackers more hardly. Maybe it's a software bug at this place which confuses the charging port with the idling time and also blocks charging which it shouldn't in the first place. It should only block USB connections.

I don't have the problem with my iPhone XS.

If you will check YouTube, Unboxing Therapy channel tested many iPhones (X, XS, XS Max) and some of them have a related problem as yours. Others don’t charge if the phone is locked.

So far on my iPhone XS Max I don’t have this issue.

It’s probably a software issue (and I hope so), rather than a hardware issue.

I hope Apple will give us an insight of this.

I have an iPhone XS MAX and have exhibited similar issues with charging. The first time was on day one after unboxing and configuring and leaving it in the official charger that shipped with it to charge while restoring from an iCloud backup it was not responsive at all. After that it stayed that way for a few hours until I took it to the retailer whom performed a reset and it started to work again.

After that if I use the official charger it charges ok but if I use a certified 3rd party charger which I used with an iPhone X and iPhone 6s Plus it keeps enabling the charge and disabling it over and over again making that chime sound over and over again, or sometimes it would stop charging all together. I have also noticed that seldom it would not be responsive while charging but that only happened once or twice and upon unplugging it it would be responsive again.

Now I just use the official charging cable and adapter that shipped with it and have my fingers crossed this is indeed a software issue that would be corrected very soon.

PLEASE STOP SUGGESTING TO CHANGE THE USB ACCESSORIES SETTING. THIS IS NOT A FIX.

It seems like every page someone suggests that as a fix and while you might think it worked for you (oh and it didn’t, check back in a day or so), it’s not working for everyone.

It‘s an iOS issue that will hopefully be patched first week of October.

/end of line

The solution turning on the option in settings does not seem to be very sustainable for everyone. Even with the option enabled, my iPhone XS doesn't always recognize the charger in standby. But every now and then it also works, for example when trying to charge my iPhone in the morning. But if I try it again after 5 minutes, it refuses to charge. Weird...

In general, it can be said that the problem is very opaque, since there is no uniform error pattern throughout.

But I'm sure that Apple can and will fix it with an update. Depending on how deep the problem is, I'm not sure if it's done with 12.1, or if it needs further updates.

Not a nice thing, but I can live with it right now (use wireless charging or activate the display before charging with cable).

I have an iPhone 7S and I believe it’s software related. When I downloaded and installed IOS 12 I too have developed the same troubles as the new phones. I didn’t have this trouble before. Having an older model rumors told me it was a way to push purchasing a new phone. After reading in my local Daily News newspaper NYC and wTching the YouTube video I realize it’s the new software.

Wish there was a way to go back to the older version of operating system.
