iPhone XS Max lightning port charging issue

So Just got my new iphone. and noticed this issue I've been having. I connect the lightning cable to my phone to charge and most of the time it’s automatically charges. However I’ve noticed several times plugging the phone in and no charge comes up. Tried unplugging and plugging back in, sometimes it’ll work. I started to test it out. And I noticed the times I plugged it in, and I get no charge, I‘d leave the phone alone for 10-15 seconds. I pick it up, the screen illuminarea and then the charging symbol pops up. ive Tested these only with apple cables. So I’m thinking it’s either a port issue or possibly software. Any ideas or recommendations ?

thanks.

When I contacted Apple-support, they said it was not an iOS issue but a sw issue that occurred when I set up an iPhone from an existing iPhone or a backup. Therefore there is no need for a bug fix of the iOS. Also they said it was not isolated to the new iPhone XS Max phones. The charging issue should therefore be fixed when I did a factory reset.

I just got my wife a XS Max, and after I watched the "Unboxing Therapy" video I tried to reciprocate the issue. Unfortunately, I was successful. I observed both issues on the same phone. I plugged it in while the screen was off and the phone did not started charging. I tapped on it and then it was charging. During a second attempt, I did the same thing, but now the phone did not started charging not even when I tapped it and after I raised the phone. For the second issue (not charging at all), I had to unplug the cable and reversed it and then the phone recognized that the charger was inserted.

I spent $1300 on this phone and it is not working properly? Shame on Apple. Everytime they provide you less for your money.

I had this problem 2 or 3 times on my iPad Pro 10.5 and iPhone SE. Plugged it in in the evening and in the morning it had the same percentage. Had to plug it in several times to get it charging. Seems like it hadn't recognized the lightning Cable. And yes I had checked the ports and there was no dust in it to block the cable.

Hi, I'm located in Canada and I have an iPhone 8 which is about 9 months old now. About a month ago I began noticing this issue. I don't think its something exclusively on the XS. When I plug my phone in to charge at night it won't register that its been plugged in. I have to wake the phone or unplug and plug it in again for it to register the charge. I didn't really think to much about it at the time until I saw Unbox Therapy make a video about it. I think it might be a port issue with newer iPhones, or maybe it's an issue with all iPhones that support wireless charging. I didn't really notice this until a while ago but it could be possible that this has been happening since I had the phone.

A couple of youtubers have now made videos on this issue, the main one being Lou from Unbox Therapy, videos been up for 6 hours. It’s had just over 1.1 million views. He tested multiple Max and standard XS with some having the issue and some not, but he believes it’s a Software issue. I also believe I saw 9to5 tech do a video on it so here’s hoping that this raises the stakes and Apple give an official response and that they move fast on this issue.

Agreed, how something like this could be allowed in the final release is beyond me. Some users on this thread have mentioned upgrading to the iOS 12.1 beta actually fixed the issue but some have said they are still having the issue. I’d like to see what Apple have to say about this. Personally I never had any issues on the public beta (which I ran on my iPhone X) and I never had any issues on the official release on my X. but after upgrading to the Xs max I’m having the issue. I feel that maybe its something that the developers missed as it’s a hit and miss and not everyone had the issue. But nonetheless Apple need to get on to patching this issue ASAP.

This has been suggested several times over the 13 pages this forum has become, its not a solution for everyone and "turning it off" is not the proper solution. It should be ON. It's under ALLOW ACCESS WHEN LOCKED: Turning this function on allows USB accessories to connect to the device when locked.

From the phone with the feature turned on:

"Turn off to prevent USB accessories from connecting when your iPhone has been locked for more than an hour".

Plus it doesn't matter if this function is On/Off.. My device could be on, unlocked, and in use while I'm plugging it into my iPhone XS Max and it still does not recognize the charger is attached..

I really wish people would read the full forum instead of recycling "fixes" they found on tech videos..

Read people, its still a thing..

I know and it ***** for affected users. A $1,000+ device should not have an issue like this one.

I added a comment to one of zollotech's videos on YouTube and he informed me that iOS 5.0.1 for the Apple Watch that is out now was supposed to fix the charging issue on that device. Today he posted a video about the iPhone charging issues and stated his Apple Watch is still having an issue even with the update. Then late last night, I posted a comment to Unbox Therapy and asked him if he was having issues with charging as well and he made a video this morning and was able to recreate the issue (perfect timing). Sounds like there have been quite a few users reaching out to these guys to shed more light on the issue. Hopefully its only a software issue and Apple finally says something..

I'm having the same issue with my iPhone XS Max, but I'm also having an issue getting a proper charge when the cable is recognized. Using the 12W Apple iPad charger, my phone was draining faster than it was charging. This was in regular mode, low power mode and even airplane mode. Hopefully a fix comes quickly. I'm gonna hop on the 12.1 public beta and see if it's any worse or better.

It's funny how no one reads the entire forum. "Note that you don't need to unlock your device to charge using an Apple USB power adapter." The majority of users, if not all, are having an issue charing using an Apple USB power adaptor. Whether it's the one that came with our device or one of the other options available: a 10W, a 12W, or a 29W USB C charging adaptor. Per the release notes it should not be happening.

Also, a few devices are freezing entirely when a charger is plugged into the device. Other users can have their iPhone active, unlocked, and open/in use while plugging the device into a charger and it still does not recognize the cable. It's not an issue with the USB security feature. Again, per Apple it shouldn't be happening with a power adaptor. It shouldn't be happening at all if you set the USB security feature to "On", which allows access to USB accessories while the phone is locked.

Apple support's call to blame a bad back up/restore issue is laughable. Its not that either as devices right out of the box are having this issue. Restore the device from iTunes and setup as a new device, I can guarantee you will still have the issue.
