AirPrint won't work when printer is in sleep mode

First, I realize this is in the wrong category but there is no option for "printing" or "airprint."

Iphone 6, running with the latest available update.

Epson WF-3640, running with all drivers updated.

Both devices are using the same wifi network.

This problem has only begun in the last few months. We had no issues prior to that and we've had this printer and same phones for about 2 years. I thought it was an Apple issue until recently when my husband had the same problem using his Samsung. Nevertheless, has anyone here found a solution to this issue? I've realized that when the printer is "asleep" (screen is off) that is when we get the message that the printer cannot be found; likewise when the printer is awake AirPrint works properly. I know that I can change the awake time on the printer, but I'd have to keep it awake all hours I'm awake for that to solve the problem (I work from home.)

iPhone 6, iOS 11.4.1

What happened a few months ago..

Do you have an airport router.. if not what model router are you actually using.

This is for airport routers..

Did you upgraded the firmware on the Airport?? That could indeed give it issues.. 7.7.9 has provision for the KRACK weakness in wireless WPA2 security.. but the Epson is probably not updated.. so you might as well try a downgrade of firmware to 7.7.8.. the actual WPA2 weakness is not really a router problem at all.. so it is quite safe to go back and apple still allow it.

What else could have happened? Different network layout? Upgrade to firmware on the router?

Bonjour is often a problem and bonjour is what Apple uses to discover network resources.. other brand routers can fail when they sleep.. if you don't currently run an airport router could you introduce one??

As I said in my original post: "First, I realize this is in the wrong category but there is no option for 'printing' or 'airprint'." The forum suggested this category and since I couldn't find what I needed I just went with it.

I don't even know what AirPort is. The only Apple products we own are iPhone and iPad. I'm a PC user with a Linksys router. The router and printer are on the same desk just a small distance away from each other. There should be no issue getting a wifi signal. The computer is in the same space, and when I print wirelessly from the computer there is no issue. It's only when we try to print from our phones (iPhone and Samsung) that we have a problem.

No upgrades, no changes made to the router. This is likely an Epson issue, but I thought I would post here to see if anyone else has this issue, since I couldn't find a forum on Epson's site.
