My mid-2010 MacBook has been regularly displaying the spinning beachball and freezing (can move the cursor but unable to click on or select anything) regularly and requires a forced restart to continue operation. EtreCheck report attached.

Earlier advice was that the Hosts file was corrupt and whilst I went through the fix process a few times, subsequent EtreCheck Reports still show that as an issue. Hopefully someone more expert than me can pointe in the right direction to get my MacBook to perform normally. An EtreCheck report generated less than an hour ago follows.

Thank you.

Ian

Hey ianfromcanadian,

If I understand correctly, the computer will boot and will begin to show a spinning ball and freeze too. One thing that can cause this to happen is if there are login items loading that may be interfering. I would recommend you use this article to help troubleshoot the issue.

Start up in safe mode

To start up in safe mode:

  1. Start or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift key. The Apple logo appears on your display. If you don't see the Apple logo, learn what to do.
  2. Release the Shift key when you see the login window. If your startup disk is encrypted with FileVault, you might be asked to log in twice: once to unlock the startup disk, and again to log in to the Finder.

To leave safe mode, restart your Mac without pressing any keys during startup.

If an issue doesn't happen in safe mode

If an issue doesn't happen when your Mac is started in safe mode, try restarting without pressing any keys.

  • If the issue comes back, you might have incompatible login items.
  • If the issue doesn't come back, it was probably caused by a cache or directory issue with your startup disk, which safe mode fixed.

Use safe mode to isolate issues with your Mac

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities. Have a good one.

Thanks very much Alex. I have been very slow to respond as I wanted some time to evaluate the fix; so far I haven't had any prolonged beach balling sine I implemented it. So thanks very much again, I really appreciate the support provided by this Support Community, the fix might appear to be simple but I haven't seen it on other forums etc. and it is great to have it working "normally".

Cheers from Oz,

Ian
