ios 12 iphone wont connect to itunes 12.8

After updating iPhone 7 Plus to iOS 12 it will no longer connect to iTunes. I have iTunes version 12.8 for Mac. It says it needs to update to a newer version and tries to download something then I get an error that download is unavailable.

Greetings slk225,

Thanks for visiting the Apple Support Communities! I understand iTunes isn't recognizing your iPhone as expected.

Let's have you follow the troubleshooting suggestions within the following guide: If your iOS 12 device isn't recognized by iTunes, you might need to upgrade macOS or iTunes

Within the guide, you'll see a suggestion to update to the latest version of macOS, and if the issue remains, to download iTunes directly from the Apple website. If you haven't updated your Mac to the latest macOS release, or wish to stay on the current macOS version you're using now, let's have you follow the provided steps:

To upgrade iTunes, use these steps:

  1. If it's open, quit iTunes.
  2. If your iOS device is connected to your Mac using USB, disconnect the cord.
  3. Download iTunes 12.8 from Apple and install it on your Mac.
  4. Unlock your iOS device, and while the home screen is visible, reconnect it to your Mac using USB.
  5. Open iTunes.
  6. When you see a message that says "A software update is required to connect to this [device]," click Install. Learn more about what to do when you see this message.

If you plan on updating your macOS software, let's have you ensure you back up your data, as described in the following guide: How to back up your Mac

Let me know how the provided suggestion works for you.

Kind regards.
