Unable to highlight EPUB in iOS Books created in Pages

I created an ebook in Pages, which I then exported as an EPUB. When I open the book in Books on iOS, I'm unable to highlight any passages. Any idea if there is a special setting I need to choose when exporting the EPUB or in iOS?

I can highlight on iOS Books EPUBs I've downloaded from elsewhere, and I can highlight this particular EPUB on Books on Mac, but not on iOS.

I can take the defaults (except no book cover) when exporting a Pages v7.2 document to ePub, and once opened in Books on Mojave, I can select and highlight text, or remove the applied highlight.
