Contacts won't sync on macbook

My Macbook has deleted my contacts. It won't sync from my phone or iCloud drive. Contacts are selected in my iCloud preferences on my Macbook, iPad and iPhone. Anybody else have this problem?

17" Imac Dual Core, Mac OS X (10.5.6)

Most of that did not work.

This did:

On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

Go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud. ...
Turn on Contacts. [It was already on. I switched it off and back on.]
[I was then presented this option:] When you're asked if you want to Merge or Cancel, tap Merge.

And that synced my contacts to my mac. It just worked...after hours of research and trial and error. I miss Steve every day.
