iPhone 7 warranty - When does it begin?

Hi

I bought an iPhone from eBay and the seller said it is brand new. I tried to check the serial number on the Apple Website, and it showed me this:

"Please activate your iPhone. We’re unable to display coverage details because your iPhone hasn’t been activated. Please contact your iPhone retailer or wireless carrier to activate your iPhone".

I took it to the Apple store, and they scanned the box and told me it was bought in 2016 and the one year warranty from Apple was ended!!

The iPhone is still not activated and I have the receipt from the seller, should I return it or it will have a warranty when I activate it?

Please help ASAP

Thanks

iPhone 6s Plus, iOS 9.3.2

The warranty begins (or in your case began) on the initial date of retail sale by Apple or an Apple Authorized seller. There are no eBay authorized sellers, so any and every iPhone sold on eBay is a used device, whether activated by anyone or still shrink wrapped in the box.

I'm sorry, but the seller is completely wrong. I don't know who you purchased AppleCare+ from but Apple warranty absolutely begins the day the phone was sold out of Apple's inventory. You visited Apple directly and they told you so. The seller cannot override Apple. Only Apple can make an exception so unless you have confirmed with Apple the warranty is valid, you still don't have Apple warranty.

I don’t know what actually happened in your case, but the warranty clearly begins at purchase. See - Apple One (1) Year Limited Warranty (my bold emphasis):

“Apple Inc. of One Infinite Loop, Cupertino, California, U.S.A. 95014 (“Apple”) warrants the Apple-branded iPhone, iPad, iPod or Apple TV hardware product and the Apple-branded accessories contained in the original packaging (“Apple Product”) against defects in materials and workmanship when used normally in accordance with Apple's published guidelines for a period of ONE (1) YEAR from the date of original retail purchase by the end-user purchaser ("Warranty Period"). Apple’s published guidelines include but are not limited to information contained in technical specifications, user manuals and service communications.”

Sorry guys, I contacted the seller on eBay and told him that I checked the serial number on the Apple's Website, and it showed me: "Please activate your iPhone. We’re unable to display coverage details because your iPhone hasn’t been activated. Please contact your iPhone retailer or wireless carrier to activate your iPhone".

I also took it to Apple, and they scanned the box and told me it was bought in 2016 and the one year warranty from Apple was ended!! Therefore, I would like to return it for that and get a refund.

His reply was: "That is not true as it in one year from when you register the phone. You should be able to activate your phone and still have the warranty no problem. Please let me know and if, for some reason that does not seem to work for you, I will be more than happy to offer you a partial refund if you would like to keep the product or a full refund if you would like to return it to us. Please let me know what you would like to do so we can get this resolved as soon as possible."

So I did and I found it true and got the one year warranty and paid for AppleCare+, too. I had to activate it via AT&T.
