Is this a Scam? Update Trusted Phone Number

My Apple environment is made up of an iPhone 6 and a Mac Air 13" Mid 2012, with OS 10.13.6

My iPhone (OS current up to the most recent request for me to upgrade to IOS 12) just notified me that

"The phone number you use with this iPhone recently changed. Update the trusted phone number you use with your Apple ID so you always have access to your account"

This seems like a scam. My phone number didn't change. And the prompt within my iPhone Settings is asking me to update my trusted phone number to a strange pattern.

My current trusted phone number is in the format +1(xxx) xxx-xxxx

using the same digits of my current phone, the prompt is asking me to update to +xx xxxxxxxx

Again this message on my home screen and subsequent instructions are coming out of the SETTINGS section on my iPhone.

This seems unusual, this seems like a scam, Nothing about my phone number has changed in years

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10), iMac13,2 8Gb

I would check with Apple ID Support to see if it is valid since it does seem a bit strange.
