my iphone 6 won’t open .doc or .xls files. The files are attached to emails and I’m ruuning ios12.

I have emails which have the above attached but when I try to preview them all I get is The operation couldn’t be completed. (OfficeImportErrorDomain error 912.)

I have word installed and if I try and open doc files with that it’s just a jumble of nonsense. I get the same error message when I try to open an xls file, although this does open properly if I open it with Excel. Any help would be appreciated.

Snowdog,

You might try installing Pages (for .doc files) and Numbers (for .xls). In the process of opening the files, these apps will convert them to their respective native formats, and there's always a chance of the formatting being altered in some way.

Hi Richard. Thank you for your reply. It did work in the sense that when I opened the file from the email I still receive the same error message, if I then share with Pages, it opens in Pages and is presented properly. However, having succeeded in that, I tried sharing with Word again which resulted in the same jumble of nonsense, unless I save a copy in Word and open that one within Word. The document is then presented properly with headers and watermark.

I can only assume that it is an issue with iOS and older versions of word documents seeing as though Word opens them once it has a saved copy within the Word app.
