Apple TV always playing audio when turned on.

So here’s my issue, every time I turn on my tv if the input is on “Apple Tv” it begins playing my iTunes library. I’d its on a different input and I switch to “Apple TV” same thing. When I pull up my control center and select ”music” the bubble below the main music it shows me what’s playing on the Apple TV.

How do I get it to not play every time I turn it on?

Chrisback, You’re not crazy!! My AppleTV 4K does the exact same thing. It will even start playing on its own in the middle of the night. I briefly played with it trying to figure out the problem(force quitting apps, etc) before I gave up and did a full reset with latest firmware re-install. That did not fix the issue.

So I dug a little deeper and discovered it will only start playing when the sound output is set to an Airplay speaker. My setup has the Apple TV plugged into my TV, but the sound is always set to my Bang & Olufsen A9 via Airplay. If I sleep the AppleTV while its still connected then when I wake it up music will start playing. If I set the output back to the TV before sleeping the ATV it will NOT auto play.

I have also found that when it starts playing on its own the ATV is still somewhat sleeping. When the music starts coming from my A9 I can turn on the TV but the ATV(My only input) is still sleeping. When I click the remote it wakes up and its video will start a few seconds later and I can go to the Music app to see that it is indeed playing from my Apple Music Library.

At this point it appears to be a bug but I have been unsuccessful finding anyone else with the same problem. I cannot say that the problem started with TVOS 12 but it started happening within the last few months and I’ve had AppleTV’s since the original.

Hello, chrisback!

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities, it's great to have you here. I understand that you're seeing music auto play on your Apple TV when you switch to that input on your television set. I'd be glad to help provide some info.

It's possible that your iPhone is playing music consistently to your Apple TV via AirPlay. If that music is constantly cycling through your library, you wouldn't necessarily know it until you switched the TV to the appropriate input. You can learn more in How to AirPlay audio , which is a support document that will also help you stop playback to see if that is indeed causing the issue.

I hope that this information is helpful.

Have a great day!

Do you set the Apple TV to sleep (standby) when you turn off the TV?

Was the Apple TV playing music when you turned off the TV before? I.e. is it continuing doing what it last did?

When you notice the music when turning on Apple TV, it should be fairly easy to check if the phone is the source of that audio, or another airplaying device, or an Apple TV app accessing a Home Sharing library or playing music from the cloud. I think you need to know the source with certainty to effectively stop the behavior.

It’s an Apple TV 4, when on it last it was either using the tv app or Netflix, so no it wasn’t playing audio. I have it set to sleep after a certain amount of time and I have the tv control turned off. and when I open my control center it shows me what’s playing on Apple TV. Doesn’t appear to be airplaying from my device. It has my credentials in it, I don’t have home sharing turned on. I am pretty sure it’s playing audio from the cloud.

Hope this helps.

I just went through 8 signup screens to post this. Apple doesn’t make it easy.

Yes, absolutely right. This has been happening for years now. It is traumatizing and apple picks horrible music and it’s loud and there is no way to disable it.

It is just poor design and a lack of testing and responsiveness on apple’s part. Personally, I blame Tim Cook. Feels like people would be checking this out under a more design-oriented leadership.

Don’t think this happens with any other tv platform.
