Unable to manually sort conversations in Messages 10.14 Mojave

Upgraded on a new MacBook Pro 13" from High Sierra to Mojave, and the option to manually sort Message conversations is greyed out. Tried removing all conversations and adding new ones. Can't drag and reorder them. Was working fine on High Sierra.

Any ideas?

"Sort conversations" in Messages I've seen this asked a couple of times before, but never any hint of an answer. The "Sort conversations" menu item appears to be grayed out in Catalina. Is there any way to make it work? Or otherwise control the sort order? I happen to be asking because Messages suddenly reorganized my conversations into seemingly random order, and I can't see any way to put them back.

message box not appearing in mojave In the Messages app under Mojave, IMac late 2013, the message box does not appear when I am included in a thread. I do not have this issue on my MacBook Pro, but there is no setting under Messages>Preferences that would seem to account for this. Any advice?

Messages not saving conversations A few weeks ago my late 2011 Macbook Pro running High Sierra 10.13.6 had an issue with Messages where it stopped working and would freeze anytime you tried to access anything in the application. I was able to fix this by deleting files out of Messages folder under Libraries. It worked perfectly for about 2 weeks. Now, while Messages works, it wont save any conversation history after a reboot. Any ideas? On an unrelated note, it seems the volume of the system has decreased. I used to be able to set the volume around +/- 50%. Now it seems I have the volume set around 1-2 "squares" below max. I have a feeling it is hardware given the age of the system, but never hurts to ask. Its probably time to upgrade to a new model, but this system has given me many years of reliable use.
